They don't on infra-red scanners, only on CCD/camera type scanners.
It would work floorlessly if customer facing CCD scanners were rolled out in every store.

There's also a problem trying to recreate the barcodes using generators. It reads the barcode as Code 128 but there's an internal use code in there at the beginning, designed so the barcode only makes sense at there stores.

This is why the 63400 reads as 979 using mBarcode. Entering either format into a barcode generator, doesn't replicate the barcode correctly.

I agree an application that supports multiple stores/cards is a good idea for the future.
