You could stick a bit of masking tape over it.

Hi, I've uploaded gettext binaries for Windows in a ZIP file: http://www.embedupload.com/?d=9AFUJVGAIZ

As michaaa62 says, go into the /usr/share/locale/en_US/LC_MESSAGES/ folder and copy the file osso-system-lock.mo to your computer. (This can be done through whatever method you are comfortable with: WinSCP & OpenSSH running on the N900, using cp in X Terminal to copy it to /home/user/MyDocs and then connecting the N900 to the computer via USB etc.)

Extract that ZIP file and place the osso-system-lock.mo file in the gt folder. (Nothing malicious in that file, I promise. The sites where I got the files are listed if you wish to replace them for assurance and the batch file can be, well, viewed in Notepad.)

Run the runme.bat file and a Notepad that supports UNIX line endings should appear. Search for (thanks, pelago!) "secu_swipe_to_unlock" and you should see, under it, a line saying 'msgid "Swipe to unlock"'. Replace "Swipe to unlock" with " " and save the file. The (very simple) batch file will then run msgfmt to put it back into the format that the N900 expects. After that, you can then copy the osso-system-lock.mo file back to the N900 in the same folder that you copied it from originally

You could edit the now. Format the file back to .mo with the msgfmt command.

Note: You need gettext installed to have the msg* commands on you N900 available.
Well at least now I have a grasp of what I need to do, any chance you can get me a step by step guide?

Followed instructions precisely as per your post above but swipe to unlock still appears....? Checked the file after the modification and those two lines have completely vanished as well, the ones that previously read
Code:
106 msgid "secu_swipe_to_unlock"
107 msgstr "Swipe to unlock"
The returned the file to the phone, dropped to root in Xterm and replaced the original file, checked and the text was still there so rebooted, and it still appears....?

it is the most stupidly pointless addition to the n900.

i got the impression that some marketing muppet at nokia decided that the n900 needed a swipe feature, because only then would people appreciate its 21st century touch screen goodness.

why would you use it when the side catch is so much quicker?

@Switch: Alright mate, hope you're keeping well!

I'll give it a try after work and see how I get on, if anything odd jumps out at me (or I get the same issue an manage to sort it) I'll let you know

@Jedibeeftrix: The single button press is quicker to check the time/date, you're right I don't think I've ever used it to unlock.

Kind Regards,
D4rK

Hiya,

Looking at your location, I would presume that you're using the British English locale so please look in the /usr/share/locale/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES/ folder and modify the file in that folder. Sorry for just blindly putting "en_US" in my original post, but my reply was more targeted at xxxxts who had his location listed as LA (which, to the best of my knowledge, can mean Los Angeles or Louisiana so it's American English either way!)

Yup - that would explain it.
