You have to change the file /usr/share/locale/us_US/LC_MESSAGES/osso-system-lock.mo, this is only possible, if you convert the file .mo to .po via the msgunfmt command.
You could edit the now. Format the file back to .mo with the msgfmt command.
Note: You need gettext installed to have the msg* commands on you N900 available.

Is there anyway to remove the text "Swipe to unlock" form the lock screen?

Followed instructions precisely as per your post above but swipe to unlock still appears....? Checked the file after the modification and those two lines have completely vanished as well, the ones that previously readThe returned the file to the phone, dropped to root in Xterm and replaced the original file, checked and the text was still there so rebooted, and it still appears....?Code:106 msgid "secu_swipe_to_unlock" 107 msgstr "Swipe to unlock"

Hiya,
Looking at your location, I would presume that you're using the British English locale so please look in the /usr/share/locale/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES/ folder and modify the file in that folder. Sorry for just blindly putting "en_US" in my original post, but my reply was more targeted at xxxxts who had his location listed as LA (which, to the best of my knowledge, can mean Los Angeles or Louisiana so it's American English either way!)
