I'd suggest using Kubuntu. It's plasma desktop is what your looking for to support widgets. Maemo is a lot like Kubuntu, if you wanted the same mobile and desktop experiance you could try Kubuntu Mobile although am not sure if it's available for the N800 I know it is for the N900 but requires work.
