When powered off and in charging mode, the N900 actually boots linux (only bare essentials).
But the small USB icon seems to appear before that time, so I don't think a software config error can be the problem.

You don't even need to switch the N900 on to re-flash, it seems.

Try to remove the n900 driver from your computer and then try to pulg your n900 to your computer.
Hope this will help
now there is green writing on the screen saying MALFUNCTION DEVICE SHUTDOWN IN 10s
