There is a completely different approach which is to mount the NAS box on the N800 so Canola sees it as local files.
I did this with my file server and it worked fine. I used the CIFS module and mounted the remote file structure into my user space. Canola took a long time to scan all the files but it worked fine with it. The instructions can be found in the maemo.org wiki under the howto section, something like using windows shares on the 770. (there are version for both the 770 and N800). You have to use Xterm and root access etc and figure out exactly what parameters to use for accessing your NAS, but I did get it to work.
The only problem I had was that a couple times after playing for several hours it woul just stop in the middle of a song, be silent for 10 seconds or so, then skip to the next song. My guess is that it has to do with WiFi interference.
Hmm... sounds like a suggestion. But ATM twonky works as it's supposed to and the 30 eur price tag is something I can afford soon
Mounting the nas directly to my n800 is not an option, since the nas is at my use for 3 weeks only and I need permanent solution.
We just bought 2 x 500 gb drives connected to my mac mini with firewire 400.
They just haven't arrived yet. I am going to install them as Raid 1, so that they are somewhat secure. Maybe I'll use those, or just the twonky. It doesn't care where my music are. It just shares them to my home network.

Just another option.
