Yeah, Archos has become pretty evil lately. It's sad: When I bought my PMA430, not only did it come with all the codecs (a short list, but still...), it even had the recording/playback cradle standard.

Also, all codecs seem to be limited to DVD resolution playback, meaning that, although it's resolution is better than the N800's practical limit of 400x240, the 605 won't use its screen real estate to the max either.

Can't play Star Control II or SCUMMVM on the Archos. No skype or VoIP either.
No thanks.

I think that the archos is a splendid web browser device. The 7" model should be absolutely stunning for web browsing. Also, the way it handles flash videos is great.

No thanks. Good to see more devices in this space, though!

Well, that depends...it's NOT a good thing if the majority of the devices "in this space" are crap as that will then give "this space" a bad name in the general press reviews which could lead companies to abandon the "space".
This Archos device leaves a bad taste in my mouth after taking a closer look at it's "business model" of charging for every little software "extra".
And God help them if ANYTHING they charge for in the future is based upon open source software or in violation of any open source copyrights.
What is the underlying OS on this thing? WinCE or Linux/Unix or whatever?

There is no rule that says people cannot charge money for Open Source Software. But I agree on the Archos-business model-bad taste statement. They've changed, man.

No, there is no rule about that but did YOU see any links they had to any modified open source code?
I seriously doubt they coded their own from-scratch OS and then had Opera make a browser for it.

See the video of viewing PDFs on the Archos?

Not impressed - it's slower than a slow thing on slow pills.

Good one. Did it show what program it was using to open the PDF? Adobe?

i'm an archos fan and don't want to compare the two devices. This thread is stupid. However a great feature to have built into the N800 browser is whenever a flash video tries to start in the web browser from any website it'll ask you if you want to use mplayer to play it and then automatically load the flash video live in mplayer, none of this copy and paste (UKMP) bullsh*t. Hopefully next firmware they can get it right.
