I never experienced this problem until after I reflashed the phone.

In my case the screen would go blank and both screen and keyboard were unresponsive.

Flicking the slider switch turned the screen on for a split second.
Removing the battery and holding the power button down for a reset seems to give me back control.

I hope it is not a hardware issue but I admit I have dropped the phone a lot!
