Mine is not starting also - this is the output from xterm:
[root ~/.mypaint]# /opt/mypaint/bin/mypaint
external python-simplejson
process 24656: arguments to dbus_connection_get_data() were incorrect, assertion "connection != NULL" failed in file dbus-connection.c line 5757.
This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.

Maybe something like DBUS user session isn't running; don't know.
