I like the idea of a unified package, as it would reduce the confusion level of new users attempting to install mplayer. The larger package size at initial install doesn't both me, but I think once the script runs and detects the cpu, it should also delete the unnecessary of the two binaries so as not to consume valuable storage space.

THANKS! Indeed that one does work on my 770, although only from the command line. Is there any way to run this version of mplayer from the menus or an icon?

KMPlayer should work.
