Whilst cracking WEP may be fun, doing it may be illegal, and can get the perpetrator into all sorts of legal issues ( read prison ).

If I found someone trying to break into my car, I would take a cricket bat to his knees, if I catch anybody trying to break into my wireless network ( presumably to steal something ) I will take similarly forthright action.

I suggest you keep your nose out of other people's business.

If you think you won't get caught, ask Randall Swartz ( perl guru ) if it's worth while - he's a well clever dude, and ended up with a prison sentence for his sins

Keep your network secure! Use wpa or wpa2! Having wep for security is just asking for someone to crack it. Always carrys my cricket bat while im wardriving.

I prefer to keep it secure by MAC address limitation.
There will be only one.

Yes, perhaps. But, MAC addresses can be spoofed. Certain NICs allow their MAC addresses to be changed via software.

Security through MAC filtering should be one layer of a "defense in depth" principle...MAC filtering, WPA2 (or better, RADIUS), VPN, firewall, etc.

That can be bypassed even easier than WEP.

You're right that security is important, but no one has a right to crack anyone's security, regardless of its level, and the courts in the US and abroad keep confirming that.

Most notably the 770, N800 and N810 from Nokia. Ever heard of those?

Maybe I should say a bit more on this.

From a cracker perspective, breaking into someone's network is bad. No doubt about that.

From a wifi router owner, the view is a bit different. You can use wep and be confident that the law is on your side. The law is on your side, that's right. In the end, you will win. In the mean time, you risk that a malicious user breaks into your network, perpetrates all sorts of crimes or misdemeanors (from sharing copyrighted material to spreading spam or child porn... take your pick). You also risk being under investigation, including your computers being confiscated, and having to defend yourself in court. In the end you will win, most probably. In the end, the real perpetrator may be caught... we hope.

Or you use wpa and are confident that it has not be cracked... yet.

To make an analogy, you may leave your house door unlocked, and be confident that most thieves get caught in the end or you can buy a lock and make it noticeably more difficult for thieves to break in.

AFAIK, in the UK it's even illegal to connect to an open network, unless you're invited. So it's quite unlikely that nobody cares about cracking the networks. What do you need it for, anyway? (I'm asking because those with a legitimate use (e.g. checking their own camp's security) are usually knowledgeable enough that they wouldn't need to ask, really.. )
