I purchased an extra battery and external charger
That was going to be my next suggestion. Fully charge up the battery in the external charger and see how it goes from there.

Which one did you get?

Hey I got the new batteries in the mail and now it works!
No thanks to crummy official nokia support.
So it turns out that two nokia chargers that worked before had stopped working almost simultaneously, using the external battery charger and the n800 works perfectly now.
