- Good experience for watching videos, in terms of speed and possibility to read wide range of formats.
- Decent mp3 player

My "custom firmwared" PSP taught me that I'm quite geeky when it comes to try new softwares and uses for a device. The Maemo, although my knowledge about it is quite limited (still discovering this website), looks like a fine OS for that. But is the SmartQ a good choice (5 or 7) ? It's more than reasonable price is quite appealing, especially for a student. I'm not looking for a powerful machine but something decent enough to evolve through time.

The device that could fit the bill best is the upcoming Pandora console running Angström IF it is for sale in stores one day. Currently sold ARM devices like N8x0 and SmartQ are not fast enough for browsing, video, OO, etc IMO.

Yeah I know about the Pandora but it's been in the "almost there" status for months now. Its price went up and I could get a 32 go Ipod Touch or a honest Netbook instead, products that actually do exist...

Too bad for the poor video performances. Maemo doesn't help in comparison of the original Ubuntu OS ?

I already have an N800 and N810, so I would want a Q7 because it wouldn't seem like so much of a duplicate of what I already have. Maybe I'll get one in a few weeks.

I'm tempted by the Q7 ... but I'd be MUCH more interested in a Q9 if such a thing ever came out. Especially if Mer is fully ported to it, and had: a Diablo-like GUI, supports screen rotation, and has a portrait mode virtual thumb keyboard. But the one problem I see with both the Q5 and the Q7 is that neither one has a dpad.

Of course, it lacks a D-Pad but for me the only purpose of it would be gaming and I don't see myself playing with a huge device like the Q7 in my hands. Wouldn't it support an USB game controller ? Not sexy but way more efficient...

Then go for a netbook (if you don't care for the pocketability) .
They're slightly more expensive than the smartq, but if the smartq is as underpowered as the n800, the netbook is a much better option.

One of my two uses for a 7" - 10" device is "on a table top", where I can use it for typing notes and the like. That fits very well with what you're saying (only not oriented toward gaming).

But, my other use is "reading stuff on the bus/train". And, in that situation, I very definitely want/need/use a dpad. Not for gaming, but for browsing (scrolling, selecting the next widget, selecting the next link, etc.), just like using the Dpad on an N800/N810 can be used for web browsing. Doing that with a dpad has a much finer and accurate granularity than using a finger or stylus on a bouncy bus/train trip.

That similar "away from a table/desk" use is why I'd want to have a portrait mode vitual thumb keyboard. I probably wouldn't do it on the bumpiest areas of my bus ride (express bus between two cities, over a semi-twisty mountain road), but I would definitely want it for things like "ssh or VNC to a server console while I'm standing in the data center, between machine rows, bringing that server back from the dead" or things like that.

I've installed mer 0.13 and it is beautyful...

It think all works - midori and xterm starts fine (the only apps i could see) and you can open settings

it would be nice to have a file manager (you need to install wifi firmware before you can go out to internet)

And Helsinki has a fine weather now
