timomaemo, your experiences totally opposite of 99% of what has been posted about the device by every major and minor tech voice on the planet. Did that not strike you as odd, and draw you to the conclusion you have the rare defective unit? It happens.
I haven't read any reputable review mention anything but hoe FAST the interface is, how stable the OS is, and how smooth it is. I/e used it for 11 days straight as my primary computer, and haven't had a single reboot. I had an issue with my mic brought on by an app that wasn't deemed safe for development, and a reflash got it back to normal.
You have to be responsible in making sure your experience is typical. You could actually poison the buzz for the device with your unlucky situation. A call for support would've been in order. People don't need info on using a damaged or defective unit. Fortunately, this viewpoint is not in spirit of most of the others online, so shouldn't carry much weight with a thorough consumer.
Maemo-Freak's chief editor and administrator received a defective trial device himself. He requested a replacement, but none are available. You will notice, while he's always very critical of Nokia, he hasn't posted his experiences on the site. That's what we call journalistic responsibility. I know you aren't acting as a journalist, butit is ok to check with support to be sure your device is working properly. It obviously isn't.

My impression is that the problems I faced with N900 are not hardware related but software related. (indeed there is no reset button and battery removal does not help)
Maemo is just not ready for the tough job that there is to do. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the starting point here was Linux. Nokia problem is in converting Linux to a next dimension thought it was build up by a very large group of very dedicated persons to start with (and having less dedication to documentation).
There seems to be a strong faith that Nokia can do some miracles by themselves in a much shorter time than Linux was created. The final conclusion is that most of the N900 applications and desktop are slow & lacking too many useful features, SW lacks stability and design is actually bulky. If you are keen to wait for SW updates that might come within 2- 12 months or so - go ahead. I know that being a test user can also be interesting.

First off, reset buttons are for devices expected to fail. This isn't WinMo or 1998. While we say Maemo 5 is still in development, its pretty stable. It just isn't as feature complete as we'd like. Your impression isn't experienced enough to make that assumption. YOU HAVE A FAULTY DEVICE! You need to listen to the myriads of far more experienced users that are trying to tell you it isn't working normally or as expected. Just get a repair or replacement.
If I did a review of the BMW M3 and said it handled badly and had anemic acceleration, had problems with grip in the corners, and couldn't hold a candle to the Hyundai Accent in terms of the performance, I'd be instantly lampooned. You're doing the same here. Until you accept your device is broken and has a defect, you4e only wasting your time and ours.
Maemo IS Linux. Nokia's work is mainly in the UI and added PIM apps. This has been done for years now. This is the fifth iteration of Maemo. I'll agree to disagree and disqualify your opinion until you've tried a working device. Because you still haven't used a working device to make such bold, conflicting, and false claims.
Only God can perform miracles. Nokia has a job to do. If you'd used a working unit like most of us, you'd know their work isn't far from reaching their goals and our expectations. Only the Easy Debian stuff is slow, and wasn't designed for Maemo in the first place. Features are added by both Nokia and the community, as the Contacts app shows. Which apps are unstable on your unit? How about posting a video of these unstable apps, and I'll post one of the same apps on my device. I assure you I've seen no unstable app to speak of on my unit. Maybe then you'll accept your device has issues atypical of the N900.
