rav these days, esp the fact that 90% of my family and friends have iphones/androids/blackberrys(that push emails every 5 mins)- its effectively instant. i do all of my social group conversation through email- for obvious reasons, its easy to reply to everyone back and have the whole conversation ongoing.. and because of that and the fact i send up to 100 emails a day for work. means i and most of my collegues and friends(in the same sort of fields) use email as the main media for conversation..

and many that dont utilise email as much- for example my gf.. she does all her stuff on facebook- thats where she chats to her mates , thats where she posts her pics, thats where she arranges nights out etc..

i understand not everyone is like this- but its only a matter of time.

yes mms is valid atm, but it has a shelf life and its running out.. email and ip stuff on the other hand has no imediate shelf life

You are not typical. Far and away most cell phone users are not checking email every 5 minutes.

well to be honest people that use smart phones invariably do (business users like my self)

i have to check my email all the time- i am not checking it anyway- it just pops up like a txt- it pushes..

this is my point- you want a phone like this for mms-- why!!!!

its a smart phone not a toy..

so many better phones out there for you peops

every person i know with a blackberry nokia e70 etc check emails constantly- everyone i know with iphones are on fb 24/7 ..

AND AS I SAID EVERYONE ISNT LIKE THIS but ITS A MATTER OF TIME..

I agree that the main media today is the mail.
But take this situation : it's new years eve, you're with a lot of friends, but one of them is not here (and he has not yet an iphone / blackberry / droid) at another party location, sick in bed or I don't know. You take a group picture, and send them by MMS a happy new year with the picture of you and your friends. He will get it right after you send it, and voila.
I agree that when everybody will have a smartphone with a correct data plan, it will be time to take this f***** MMS protocol and put it down to the garbage disposal of computer hall of shame. But right now some people still need this crappy protocol.

I'm splitting hairs, but actually this is not true, while in practice it might seem so. There is no guaranteed delivery of SMS/MMS messages in the standard and if the message is not delivered, you might not get notification on this as most of the operators (at least in U.S.) do not support notification reports, which would tell when the message has been received. There is no guarantee that the SMS/MMS will be instantaneous, which is why you will see cases where some messages are lingering somewhere in the systems hours or even days before they are delivered.

So while it is true that there are far more SMS/MMS capable devices in the market than email and I think nowadays MMS is actually configured properly on most devices to work at least inside that particular operators network, there is no guarantee that it will ever be received by the recipient and absolutely no guarantee of any instantaneous delivery.

Why is it just a matter of time? EVERYONE will decide they need to stop what they are doing to check email, or read an email immediately every 5 minutes?

just a blank screen- also the majority of my sms's were like hours late- why - coz the networks are blocked att that time- i also got loads of emails sent just after 12- guess what none were delayed..

of course this is all down to traffic, and proving the cellular is very popular, but there are better ways- and gradually ip will kill cell.

And I've never said they must add a new functionnality before resolving critical bugs I just said that some people still use MMS that's all
