until meego chooses deb I will be a bystander for this project. There is a reason why Intel never had an active community...not sure if it will listen this time, though I am not positive.

How about you all try to be a bit more productive? If you have a meaningful opinion, try to bring something to the project you're all criticising so much, get on the mailing lists and contribute already.

You do realise that -- all of you here -- have been doing the very productive act of bickering pointlessly for the past 20 pages.

Congratulations; you've really made a difference.

I'll say again what I said on the mailing lists: it's a bloody package manager. Do you realise how pointless it is to say you won't be part of a project because of an extension? There is so much more to an Operating System than an extension...

It's like saying you refuse to help make a project better because it will be distributed as an .msi...

Seriously people?

It's a web forum, what have you expected?

If you are really interested in what is going on in MeeGo, then subscribe to the MeeGo-dev mailing list. There is a lot of constructive discussion there and Intel folks are really active and helpful.

You do know Moblin used to use debs don't you? It didn't have all that much of an actuive community then either. I wonder if there might be some other difference between the Maemo and Moblin histories, like, say, one of them being sold pre-installed on thousands of devices? Nah - that couldn't possibly be the reason.

Well.. seeing as how you also refer to me in this comment I guess I'll just stop posting on the forums then.

Obviously anything I have to say or any "contributions" of mine are just bickering and irrelevant.

Personally... I thought the discussion was quite interesting for the first little while but most opinions were exhausted several pages back.

And FYI: I am on the mailing list... and OMG - this discussion happened there too!

I've been there and I don't think we can contribute or change much with good arguments.
They have their fixed agenda and they are paid to work on it.
Instead, some of us have started a new community-driven project:

Open-source is driven by the needs of its developers or contributors, not by commercial interests or by what marketing believes the customers would need.

We build something that works the way we want and we don't need to ask or wait for other people to implement it for us. If MeeGo is really open-source, then both projects can happily coexist, while we integrate their work into our project.
More choice is good.

I think many of you old timers are forgetting...

RPM is the reason why so many other package managers exist.

Just about all other distros have tried to evaluate RPM it at one time or another in the hope of a "unified package manager", but found the format flawed beyond repair.

The technical situation may have changed slightly since then, but nothing will change the bad reputation and legacy that rpm has.

Quite frankly, I'm surprised anybody still uses rpm, given the much superior alternatives for package management that exist today, such as portage.

Now, if a sane layout of the base filesystem on meego is too much to ask for, and forcing package maintainers to work harder just to convert to an archaic package manager is considered a smart move, you can count me gone from this community, faster than I got here.
