For what its worth, I've put redenisc's pre-release version of VLC (taken from his website) into my repository. Go to the website on my signature to see the repository details. Use the Maemo 5 (Fremantle) repository.
Tried installing VLC from Qole's repository apt-get install vlc. Downloaded a playlist from TVCatchup then ran it with VLC immediately.. heres the terminal dump..

If you guys need a player for now just use mplayer and sib.. It plays all file types and is very comfortable to use.

Problem with this phone is that most users thinks everybody are are linux experts!
We are not!
