No argument there. And that is fine.. it's exactly what I said. 2 wiki's, for 2 purposes. We just need a serious overhaul of the Video_Encoding one, and an update for the Manual one.

I think having one single encoding guide for the N900 is best as there will be no confusion.
The manual one http://wiki.maemo.org/Manual_video_encoding - should really be called command-line encoding - and could easily be slotted into the "main" Wiki http://wiki.maemo.org/Video_encoding
A single document with one section on Presets, quick step-by-step in a few paragraphs, and the rest or bulk of the wiki is talking about each thing like Anamorphic or whatever as it applies to the N900, including encoding limitations, etc., .

I may be joining the whole encoding party a little late, but if Im not fussed overly about the file size (I do have 48gb to play with) can I just stick an AVI file on the phone and play? Surely thats my option for the best quality?

Ok, I'm already testing two HandBrake presets uploaded in this topic. I'm converting some 720p trailer and movies. It should all be done tomorrow morning. Here goes the list;

I definitely do. AVI files (if i can) I'll just put on as they are, but any good profile that makes a bluray rip play well im very interested in! Not that I've downloaded Handbrake yet, but im gathering from you guys that its definitely the best converter to go for?

Lets say I have a whole bunch of AVI files, its really not necessary to convert to any other format, other then size, right? Its not like I can get a better looking AVI from conversion. And as Im not short of space, 700mb doesnt bother me.
Am i right in assuming though that your advice about converting to MP4 using an H264 profile is beneficial if Im converting a DVD file?

Thats great, I'll have a good read. Luckily (or not, however you see it!) I only really have bluray now, so converting DVD's will be a very rare activity for me, but always handy to have an idea about how to get the best results.
I have a few bluray rips (around the 2-3gb mark) so i'll probably focus on finding a profile for them - trying to reduce as far down as possible, but it would be nice for someone to look at it and immediately see that difference in quality. It'll be interesting to see how well the N900 can handle the higher bit rates

However, the first one now is talking about anamorphic AVIs and lots of manual resolution decisions. That's the point about preset-based software: you select the preset you want based on quality/space considerations (which only the user can decide) and click "Go".
The page is now a mish-mash of different stuff, half of it is trying to be an introduction to video transcoding ("but I just want to click 'Go'!"), and the other half is now stream of consciousness cut & paste stuff about Handbrake, with some tangential references to the N900.
