Thinking of it again, it's the source that is signed, not the built package itself.

Yeah - I found the original source for that and the guy's taken it off his website now. He said it was way out of date, and he couldn't be bothered dealing with the rabid fans of the different formats any more.

Perhaps I could "port" Fedora to MeeGo

Looking at the Fedora 12 arm repo, it's looking pretty huge already. It would just be a matter of submitting those .src.rpms to the forthcoming MeeGo buildsystem (OBS).

In my opinion all community driven distros catch the ball and the company driven dont. I saw Suse, Fedora, Redhat, Mandriva, Debian, Ubuntu, Maemo, Mer and so on. I use Debian for any instance but am open for others, what I learned over time is that every time I come across a distro using .rpm is that it wont fit me. Why? I used fedora for about one year, while I was getting to know debian better. this doesnt explain the 'why'? ok, what about compatibility? most linux newcomers start with 'buntu' (yeah shouldnt use that word I know), or with derived distros like mint or something you just boot and it works out of the box. most of the stuff you find is manageable in THE 'debian-way'! that didnt work for me THE '<put in rpm based distro>-way' as there is no such way. merging maemo with some other linux should keep the debian-way as the debian-way-**user** base is growing (we are not talking about company-servers here, are we?).

what distro do you use?

I dont care!

I care about the crowd for whom I do serve as community member!

In my opinion a MeeGo has to come from the ashes of Maemo and Moblin.
"We have an already working core we developed 2 years and we have .rpm build system which works just fine!"
I dont care!
Alien those rpms if you like to! but please dont pick what is less work! Pick what is best for the users.
It might be more work to have Moblin integrated in Maemo but it is worth it. (looks like Moblin is getting the Qt-UX-UI engine and thats it, from what is talked)

btw I first thought 'cool'... now I am concerned as this looks like another company ridden horse. And as it is, community has to pick the colour of the powermenu nothing more.

Doing this not the Debian-way will be at least one finger cut off from maemo-community.

For the first guy telling me off because of the usage of rpm and deb as equivalent to Redhat-based and Debian-based: its not about the packaging you troll, its about the gods linux people believe in!

Well, at least you are honest about your religiosity. Frankly, I think it is unfortunate that some people end up making a religion out of these things.

I understand completely that software choice is based on a lot more than just doing the job. For example, many choose to use OpenOffice.org over MS Word for many reasons besides its ability to create documents or even its price. That is fine, reasonable, and understandable, for many. Others do not agree. They either do not understand the reasons for the choice, completely ignore them, or simply have different priorities. No need to get dogmatic about it. It works for some, it doesn't for others.

Nokia and Intel have seen advantageous for them to start a new Linux project. They have made some choices that *they* feel comfortable with. They are making the project completely open and free. They are inviting any one that so desires to join them and contribute. I think it is a thing of beauty that we should be grateful for.

You don't like some of the choices they made. You think the project would have been more appealing to *you* if they had made different choices. Well, that is the way it goes in free software. No project pleases every one. Some of us like to use OpenOffice.org while others like Abiword. Some of us like to use *buntu while others like PCLinuxOS, Mandriva, Fedora, etc. Hey, no need to be dogmatic about it. Just enjoy what you like and be grateful that you have it. If you can't find what you like, build it yourself. No one is stopping you. If you can't do it or do not want to do it, please don't complain to those that do.

Not that you are just complaining. I understand that you are trying to influence their choices to make the project more appealing to you. But, I doubt that they are going to change their stance at this point. I have not seen a powerful enough reason for them to do so. Religious zealotry is surely not going to do it.

Just one simple question:

If Fedora is good enough for Linus Torvalds, what is your problem with it?

Linus Torvalds also uses the Nexus One instead of the more Linux-like N900...

So, what's your point?

My point is, what's the problem with Fedora? What's the problem with being Fedora-based?

People are entitled to their opinions of course, but I think the point of fedora is being missed.

Fedora is a base, and I wouldn't recommend fedora to use natively on any consumer operating system - it's simply not designed for that.
Please see Fedora's objectives

If you are realistic, from a luser perspective, there isn't a whole lot of difference between all the linux based distributions or even between UNIX and Linux, which is why they are generally called "flavours" - they all taste slightly different, but it is essentially the same dish.

I love fedora, and it fits well for my usage - but my desktop looks identical to a friend who runs ubuntu - we use the same apps. I'm happier with fedora - he is happier with ubuntu.

Would anyone recommend debian for a general user? they shouldn't. This is one of the many things ubuntu is good at.

Debian based Ubuntu = Nogo! ??????
