I had applied and haven't got any reply yet. Does that mean they have rejected it or did you get some confirmation that you have been "turned down"?

Which developer program did you go through? The community (Meego.com) or via Nokia Developer?

If the former, rejection e-mail letters went out about a week or so ago. If the latter, no clue on when they will respond.

Nokia Developer. Not really done any QT development yet, so don't think they will be favourable.

Get Qt Creator and if you have any other experience, start porting your pre-existing applications. I'm seriously contemplating doing that for the couple of Android apps I currently have out there.

I'm not sure if that's what they're trying to do...
I think they're just trying to fortify their feature/dumbphone market-share.
They're banking on a massive chunk of the emerging world not wanting smartphones for some time.
Can't put lipstick on a pig & say: "there, we now have us a full-blown smartphone OS."

In emerging world there is indeed larger market opportunity for something local. It might be called differently than "full-blown smartphone OS", it would need to support other means to deliver applications and content than centralized single "application store" but fashion for apps is there as well. If Nokia would be able to introduce answers to some of those questions in a locally-optimized way, they may have quite a fortune. They have some experimental bits and pieces already, tested in India and African countries, and elsewhere. There is still large gap going from experiments to a market.
