Actually Xournal remembers those settings.
Indeed, there's a bug on the saved color, but the defaults are saved.

What I did:

Change tickness of the pen, set it as default and then save prefs.
Reloading Xournal restored my new default pen tickness.

I would like to use Xournal but it says this on the Maemo.org download page:

WARNING: Installing Xournal from this install file will add either "maemo Extras (chinook)" and "maemo Extras Devel (chinook)" repositories. I STRONGLY suggest you to remove the "Devel" one after Xournal has been installed.

What the heck does this mean? And maybe it's just me or my lack of technical sophistication. I'd like to try Xournal, but not until there is one that installs without asking me to hack my 800 (with Diablo). Please let me know.

dvjames,

Short answer- You're fine to follow those instructions.

Long answer- Extras-Devel is a repo for packages that are for development, are being tested, or are considered 'not ready for general distribution'. The danger with leaving the repo enabled is that it could allow you to install unstable apps or worse, allow you to upgrade packages from a stable version to an unstable one.

However, some apps you want might only be in Extras-Devel. In this case, I think xournal only needs a shared library from Extras-Devel.

As a Xournal user I'd recommend installing the app, then disabling the Extras-Devel repo via the application manager. This will give you xournal without making your system unstable. This isn't *hacking* the device. (Chinook aside, with the current state of Diablo repos, there are more than a few stable apps that haven't made it to either repo simply because they don't autobuild...)

It is a good idea in general, to only enable extras-devel when one wants a specific package (such as Xournal) then immediately disable it afterwards. This prevents the application manager from trying to 'update' you into an unstable state. Make sense?

hope this helps,
kernelpanic

[edit]p.s.- to disable repositories, in the application manager menu, goto Tools->Application catalog. You'll see a window pop up with the list of repositories. look for 'extras-devel' and click 'edit'. look for a 'Disabled' checkbox and click it. Then press 'ok'. You're done ;-)

very clear! thank you! I will give this a shot. I really appreciate being a member of Internettablettalk, everyone here is incredibly helpful to us less sophisticated members...

;-)

One of the reasons I think Diablo installed without a hitch is that I don't do much tweaking to my system. As is, the 800-810 are pretty powerful computers. When I was just in Houston, I couldn't get VPN thru my hotel, and thought why not try my 800? Worked incredibly well to access the internet version of my work Outlook. That, and the Apple bluetooth keyboard I carry, made it instantly usable.

I was able to access my email (personal and business) and do general Internet browsing any time I wanted - so I forgot about my laptop and just kept using the 800. Now if there was an 8" version of the IT that was a little more powerful <g>....You listening Nokia?

very comprehensive. I can see I will have a lot of fun with this. The ability to save to PDF will make it useful as well. wow! Absolutely the best app I've seen on the Nokia IT platform to date. While I'm not quite as technically proficient, I am a pro-user of apps <g> and appreciate being able to use a tool like this for business. So far it's been one of the most valuable purchases I've made in terms of making me productive ANYWHERE. With the forum behind it, it will continue to be a great tool...I chose between this and the iPhone based on the fact that there was a large group of talented people who are developing in this OPEN environment where changes are made based on interest and need rather than what some marketing person says. Again thanks!

anyone else having problems getting xournal installed on a n800 (diablo). If I go to maemo.org, browse to the xournal app, then try to install, application manager errors:

Unable to install xournal.
Some application packages required for
the installation are missing.

Clicking on the "Details" button reveals that the missing package is libhildonfm2.

Any ideas where to go next on this?

i installed Xournal from extras but it does not appear to work:

1. After the first start, Xournal no longer starts from the menu, it only starts from xterm.
2. Clicking color selection icon crashes Xournal.
3. None of the icons seem to work.

Am I doing something wrong?

Xournal works fine for me.

To install you need to enable the chinook extras repo.

@fms - did you restore from backup when you flashed diablo? NOt that I have an answer for your problem, but restring from backup caused problems with a few apps it seems.

I also find that skype won't install, for the same reason - missing libhildonfm2 (also missing libhildonmime0)

I'm using a N800, and reflashed to latest firmware (RX-34_2008SE_1.2007.44-4_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin) before trying to install..

grrrrr.
