Personally I don't think there's any catching up to be done.
Everything that the iPhone 4 does has been done before by other devices.
Some bloggers/reviewers were panned for claiming that the iPhone 4 is going to have the video recorder market quaking in it's boots for having HD video recording.
The Samsung Omnia HD had already done that and the Sony Vivaz was doing it before the iPhone 4 too.
Facetime? It's video calling. But other devices can do that over 3G and it's only iPhone 4 to iPhone 4. You can jailbreak and enable it over 3G, but it's still only iPhone 4 to iPhone 4.

As far as I can see Apple have only taken the best breakthroughs from every other device, called them different names and been the first to offer them all in one single device.

Let's see...

- countless of great concepts are conceived in many garage, labs, schools, thinktanks, companies, etc.

- a small portion of them are developed into good implementation (proto) to successfully demonstrate its benefits.

- a smaller portion of those prototypes are refined to be commercially viable products.

- an even smaller portion of them 'get paired' with the right industry players to be transformed to be proper product(s).

- a much smaller portion of that gets the right packaging and marketing legwork to make it into a commercial 'hype'.

- an even smaller slice manage to deliver on their initial promise to live longer than the 'hype'.

- a significantly smaller portion of that gets the required consistency and focus to spawn into successful lines (sagas) and retain their commercial success.

- etc.

If you think that you can 'create a successful product' just by understanding a concept. Just by 'inventing' a technology, then it's time to fill in the gaps.

It's one thing to do something first.

It's another thing to do it well.

It's a third thing to be successful with that thing, whether through mindshare, financial success, or influence.

It's a fourth thing to continue to be successful.

Lets get back to the OT here.

This is how the world works. Everyone hates something. Whether it is because of dislike, envy, disgust or fright, it makes no difference.

Football fans are constantly bashing opposing teams, and sometimes even their own team. Smartphones allow the user a measure of control, so that the user becomes attached to the device.

Therefore he will feel the need to bash competitors. Whether it is to show off his phone, or secretly envying the other phone, or simply hates it. It is completely human. This is a relatively Nokia forum. Some Android and Apple bashing is to be expected. Apple might get more bashing because it is more popular and completely locked down (which in these forums it matters a lot).

I personally don't like Apple. I am not saying they suck, and will never say that the N900 is the best device out there. It would be simply untrue. Just like the iPhone certainly is not the best device out there.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For me the N900 is by far the best device for me.

Those are good points, Pantera, but I disagree with one. Most if not all Apple bashing I saw were either the result of trolls that bash everything else as well or a direct reply to an "apple rules" post that is inherently a provocation.

Not in itself, no, mostly unbiased comparison, launches, discussions, company politics go unhit, but registering on a Nokia forum and posting that an identical feature is better is going to atract some name calling.

There is a difference between someone believing he or she is superior and having that person jumping naked on your dinner table, genitalia flapping, claiming to wwoooooo! rock harder. After a while it gets really old.

Every now and then some person pops in and calls everyone fanbois (in spite of ample complaint), idiots, whatever. This behavior deters from open arms receiveing of new opinions.

Few "bashings", if any, happen to a well formed, thought out post. If they do, please report the post to a mod. We have enough users to not miss a few. Especially now that we have fresh rules. I am yet to see mods encouraging such behavior.

Posting and bashing using incorrect facts is a sign of stupidity and lack of research. And I agree with you that some posts are just flamebait.

Which brings me to my next point. If you are an Apple or Android lover, and especially not a current Maemo owner..and constantly bash Nokia and Maemo or praise competitors, without ever contributing anything useful..to me you are a flamer and should respectfully leave.

No offense meant to anyone, but I never felt compelled to join an apple or android forum and bash their products and raise Maemo. That would be disrespectful, flamebait and not my freaking job. It's Apple's, Nokia's and HTC's (and others) job to bash competitors and praise their products.

I mean what do you get from such posts? Certainly not money, and most probably anger from users. It is uncalled for to join a community forum and praise a competitor. Hell I even don't like posts praising Nokia. What I like is useful threads about apps. Like for example what the Nitdroid, or overclocking or what MohammedAG are all about. No competitors. Just a bunch of users and developers working together for the greater good.

And I find it very sad that topics like this get so much attention and serious threads sometimes are ignored.

They're allowed to persist, and when a mod takes action they're subject to pathetic amounts of abuse by immature idiots who think they're fighting against The Man.

The last thread like -that- was allowed to exist for one post too many.

Apple iPhone! I love it! I love ALL the Apple products! They give me the opportunity to prove I'm BETTER than the average person who would buy them!
