I didn't mention that point because a) I don't know how the lincensing would work b) it's not like phones have a common architecture like PC's.

Well, these days 'Android Hardware Adaptation Layer' is a pretty good one..

True - it is what it is, but AFAIK there isn't a standard to e.g., flash the NVRAM via USB with whatever you want, and that whatever you want will know exactly where the phone will boot from etc. etc.. Basically, my point is that there isn't a standard architecture for anybody to install their own OS, unless you know a little bit more than your normal/advanced user. Or even better: make the phone boot from USB and install an OS like a normal PC.

Having said that, this doesn't mean that the Android HW Adaptation Layer is a shortcut for all manufacturers out there who want to implement Sailfish, which is good news.

Yeah. Sell the sw and let the user run it on some advanced ****.

That's a cool model. Jolla can build cool sw, they can't build top notch hw. Leave that to the big boys.

The only issue is how to handle payment ? ,?

Licensing would be challenging, but let's face it. With Android being so ubiquitous and can run on a wide array on devices, we're not looking at cellphones of like OS being more and more like PC's in their heyday.

If Android can run on OMAP3, OMAP4, Snapdragon, et al, it's just all about having an OS either scales well, is optimized, is easy to install and is easy to distribute; if not all aforesaid points.

We need to stop thinking about cellphones as closed off, planned-obselescence devices and start seeing them for the powerful devices that need to be as extensible and controlled as we see fit as our PC's that run GNU/Linux, OpenBSD, Windows, Hackintosh (stretch here legally, but bear with me), NetBSD, Haiku OS, et al.

Why not? More cellphones soon in people houses than PC's sooner than later. We should be able to control the OS too.

Yeah, everybody have enough smartphones to supply 10 life times at least. One device should be enough for a few years.

If it would be possible to install other oses we can start handing out devices to people without smartphones. Even 5 years old android smartphones could run sailfish and be as new.

You'd need to educate people about the fact that a cell phone these days indeed is a personal computer, and that its OS and software can be updated, so that you don't need to buy an entire new device just to upgrade.

However, it seems like manufacturers like to keep the people ignorant. They lock down their devices more and more, making it very hard to switch OSses. Take Windows for example. They require secureboot to be present, and for ARM devices they even lock it down. Of course MS makes sure that users don't even notice it when running Windows. But try to switch to something else and the fun starts. Sometimes the UEFI is simply botched so much it only can run Windows...

I want to buy a new laptop. But I will not pay for Windows. That really limits the choices to about... uhm.. zilch. Nada. Bupkis. Currently, in Mobile and Tablet land, the situation is even worse.

I'm afraid it's up to politics to force and open up devices, make sure warranty is correctly handled, and educate the people about the alternatives. But that's a looong way ahead. As it is now, even public media here in the Netherlands force the use of the Play store to get to Android apps, they require the use of Twitter and Facebook to communicate, etc.

+1 for openness, and it will eventually come. Loads of politics have to be dealt with though, it'd be nice if govs actually enforce this, but what do they know about technology? :-)
