The default video settings produce excellent quality but a large file size. I am now testing by adjusting the video quality to see what I can get away with in terms of quality on the n900.

What is the maximum vertical dimension the N900 can handle? Is it 700? I'd like to get the video as hi-res as possible for the TV-out side of things. But, I don't want to go over the limit of viewable images on the N900's display. Thanks. Is this information available somehwe, BTW? I don't think the manual gets into such delicacies, does it?

Regarding my tests on 'Win x DVD Ripper Platinum'

I can report that I have just ripped a Dvd to my n900 with some specific settings and the total file size was 765mb and didn't take long to encode. I didn't check at the time but it was less than an hour.

Film: Chariots of Fire:
Length: 1hr: 58min

Quality: very good.

The max res is 848x480 I think, so it will support that vertical res of 480 pixels exactly. I've been using 720x304/384, etc., from DVDs so that it looks good also playing on PS3 on my TV (720p). TV out at that res actually looks superb, not much different to DVDs IMHO, on a 50" plasma. Depends on how picky you are I suppose

It will play larger res's and scale them, but I don't think anyone has really tested that so far. It will scale down 1024x no problem, but the upper limit on x, y? Who knows?

EDIT: sorry, I mean the stored resolution of 1024 (normal for PAL movies on DVD). Result is the same 720.

You can save space by messing around with encoding settings, but I am pretty content with the standard one as it's enough to cart around 20-30 movies and a whole series of a TV show in the phone (using 32GB+16GB).

You're going to need to provide more details. Maybe tell us exactly what settings each screen of the HandBrake window shows you.

Does the file play ok on your main computer?
