OK i have read enough on this thread now and i think something needs to be pointed out here....

A council role is to work for it's people (members) and to do that it firstly needs to LISTEN to its people right ?.

Upto now all we have seen from Nokia is a feeble attempt to raise Maemo to a standard that at least works every component in the device and quite frankly it has fallen flat on its face to even get close to this.

Maemo has OFFICIALLY been de-nounced by Nokia and that was one hell of a shock for everyone.

OK now Nokia told us we will have Meego and then they OFFICIALLY announced Meego will NOT be written for the N900 leaving everyone even more shocked.

Now as i see this with clear and unblotted sight it is now apparent Nokia will do SFA for the N900.

Ok COUNCIL now we need some help here because quite frankly we have been used and very abused here by Nokia as they swiftly move on to another FLAGSHIP device other than our N900.

IF a council is to exsist then it has to prove its worth at least and from where i am sitting it has failed miserably.

Look at FACTS not fiction or hearsay and realise for everyone on this community just what the fing hell is going on here and you will realise something has gone drastically wrong.

Now stop writing BULLSHITE and at least give us a light at the end of the tunnell because right now the light is going out on us and sod all apparently we can do about it.

We DONT want a half baked Meego OS from a community that does not even have a full set of drivers to their name we want the company who designed and built the N900 to give us at least ONE fully working OS that brings EVERY component into operation giving us what we are used too from the previous 100 +++ devices, now is this going to be possible or not WITH the COUNCIL helping and been seeing to at least be pushing for something, anything but the light going out.

Enough talk enough promises enough letdowns now it is time for some action against Nokia as we ALL paid the equiv of 500 bloody pound for this device.

Enough talk talk talk let us all see some action here.

I have to respond to this, as it shows very well how misunderstood the role of the Council is. Let's see what Council action resulted in
  • It did make the public (more) aware of the issue. By writing about the issue, it made even more people aware what their phones are doing.
  • It did get an official Nokia response. Whether it contains something we agree with/like or not is a different matter.
  • We did turn some heads. As seen from Peter's post, the way the issue was handled at least made them a little bit more aware how important this question is for the community.
  • It did support and advertise solutions to minimize the effect of the software in question. In communications about the issue, we promoted Graham Cobb's NotMyNokia solution.
  • The above allowed community members to take necessary action and/or judgement on the issue. This is the most important one.

See what I'm getting at ? We're not an executive power or Supreme Court over Nokia, but sure as hell can make a difference for people in the community (of course, the half empty-half full paradigm applies here, too). In my personal opinion, this was a low-hanging fruit for Nokia to show goodwill and could have come out with a win-win from this situation, but then again, I'm no lawyer and have no idea how this stuff is handled internally. The bottom line is - if there is a single person whom our actions have affected or at least made more enlightened, I say the Council did it's job (even if it was only damage control). We cannot change news from bad to good, but we CAN and do help the community deal with it the best it can. For some people this means nothing (just as some people just don't understand what good are we if we can't provide them with upgrades), and that's something I understand (though I disagree heartily).

What i fail to understand is why this community can not do anything at all to stop Nokia from the suicide action against the N900 when it was firstly set up by and on behalf of Nokia.

If the Council is to do anything at all to be recognised then surely it must see the massive problem we are now having from Nokia so if it does.... would any of its elected members like to explain on here just what they can do to at least get us Meego or even Maemo in a complete state?.

So I kindly ask you to stop talking in my name, because obviously we do not agree on this point.

abill_uk, we have the correct channels for addressing software issues, please use them rather that ranting vacuous statements. Check out the bugzilla, post & vote for bugs you want to see fixed.
