shurly not have a logo and mascot if the logo is ''printed over'' the eyes of mascot

real difference between logo animal/name/mascot

the real point of a mascot is to can be personified by someone in event or in video ''see movement/movable/costume''

Opabinia be very cool but can you build a ''real'' costume for drees and make jump lol

raccoon is too much similart like firefox in my head

hum

i waiting for more inspiration to make my own try on the subject soon

Oh, and how would I like a poster of an Opabinia mummy with three or four cute Opababies following her, in warm, crystal-clear Cambrian seas...

These could be a metaphor of Maemo and its kde, debian, android, jaunty children (one of those children could be mer, just at the point of evolving into a lobster...)

But again, maybe I'm just getting crazy
*happy dance* I'm so happy that you like my Opabinia that much!! You've made my day!

Rotfl Pray tell, what on earth does a baby Opabinia look like??

Just to let people know, I've used some (=most) of the proposed mascots in my Maemo Juggler game. If any of you have reservations about their publicly posted artwork used in GPL games, let me know.

OMG, I just about spewed my lunch all over my screen laughing at that. ^_^ And as funny as that was, I would actually go for something like that if it were made available. No joke!

Personally I've always been dubious about the benefit of mascots, BUT... when you think about it they do exist on an awful lot of successful open source projects, and maybe they help to make the projects more noticeable, memorable and approachable.
Given how so many products are identified by their logo, and most closely remembered/associated with it, they are important. And they're growing ever more important for FOSS too.

Actually, I would say no. Since Maemo is about community, a people focused logo/mascot would be best. Ubuntu is people focused and has that really weird 3 people in a circle logo (for those who didn't know, yes, that's what it is.) for their logo/mascot. On top of that, so many others have used the penguin by now that it's really become cliche'. So sticking with something a bit more original would be best.

Maybe possibly an idea like this:

[I didn't zip through all 25 pages of responses to this, so yell if it's already been suggested...]

A penguin stuffed into a small (clear) box.

I wish I could draw.

The penguin would be smashed in there, but have a smile on it's face, to show that it's alright

That's what came to mind instantly when I saw this thread title.

Ah, you plan to build off the public's strong affection for Bonsai Kittens then?
