I don't imagine people would use the tablet for 'normal' picture taking, but there are PLENTY of other uses of a tablet camera that requires good image.

).So I agree 100%, more is more in this case. However, if it's at least the quality of the Tab 7, then it should be sufficient for the 'utility' purpose. Anything in which case you're going to want to showcase the pictures, you're better off with a dedicated point-and-shoot, or a tablet with a better camera!
I think AR doesn't require much from the camera perspective in order to be effective. It's more a SoC DSP thing to quickly parse shapes. Though I suspect a clearer image would be more helpful, though not a higher res image as that would mean more pixels to compute.

@Capt'n: Aye, there are plenty of image acquisition+manipulation tasks for tablet that can make use of the camera... most people who discount the value of a camera on tablet are stuck in the existing paradigms (cameras = must be handheld, tablets = closer ilk of notebooks) 
(not you of course, but I see many people make comments of how silly it would be to hold the tablet camera-like to take pictures, or phone-like on your ear to make phone calls; which are impractical and bad example of how to make use of said technology on tablet form factor).
As for AR, I think it depends on what it's used for.. if the AR-tech is only used to acquire image info to be translated + overlayed back for realtime/immediate informative use (navigation, ocr translation, etc) then yaeh.. as long as the camera quality is sufficient to capture the necessary information then that's that.
But there are increasingly more AR applications too that make use of higher image quality... Imagine if the interior decorator from my example above has a stack of AR cards that she can place around in said empty room to symbolize furnitures and other objects to furnish it. She (and the client) can move those things around and watch the effects LIVE on the tablet! They can take snapshots, print them out for reference, save for futher digital editing, and so on, etc...

I can see a use case for using the tablet for video as opposed to pictures.
I usually get stuck behind the camera (video / still) at our kids events. As such my eyes are usually on the camera screen as opposed to the action in front of me. This means I miss much of the actual live event.
I can see using the tablet, taking 720p video (obviously not as good as a dedicated video camera) but depending on the event, still ok. I'd get a much nicer view of the event on an 8.9" 1280x800 screen vs. a ~3.5" 320x240 screen. Granted there wouldn't be much zoom or other dedicated video camera capabilities, but for impromptu events, or events in locations where you are close to the action, it would be nice. Probably annoy the people behind me though (holding the tablet at eye level)

If I was thinking of AR development (can't be in all places at once), I would totally desire to 'borrow' your concept
. Of course, my obnoxious ethical persona (he who must not be named) would prevent this from happening.Awesome concept though, seriously. Here's my take while we're jamming...
1) An online database of furniture and furnishings (eg. plants/decorations)
2) easy printable AR codes specific to the furnising in the DB.
3) Put these around the room where you're interested in having your furniture displayed
4) Move the tablet around to reveal the furniture.
5) Keep a log in memory of the relative positions, and using the gyro continue to draw elements in which the AR code is offscreen. In that way, once when at least one AR code is in the cameras view, the others objects are automatically rendered even if the AR code is slightly off-camera or too small.
6)...
7) profit!
As a bonus, the final 'snaps' can be rendered by the server in high resolution and synced with the device seamlessly!
.... oh, I like that ...

I don't know if you know this, but Google recently purchased a company called 'Green Parrot Pictures'.

This company specializes in post-process video stabalization and clean up. Their algorithms are quite impressive and likely will find their way in youtube.
Combined with the (assumed) improved composure of shooting on an 8.9" screen, and with these handy tools, I'm betting that some amazing videos can be taken by regular joes and janes.
