I am being serious.
The practical problems IMO are:

1) New hardware. This will require investment that's hard to get by only community like this.
2) Patents. You need to be one of the big boys to get in to the game at this point.

I'd love for this to be possible, but I'm afraid it requires some serious financial backing to be realistic. On the other hand, I'm just a layman without any real knowledge. This is just my impression.

The above mentioned GTA04 developer mentioned in his talk that there are about 5 active people behind the project.

But on a serious note, they are a (small) company, are probably all hardware gurus with long time experience and they still had quite a few hardware issues to work through (according to the talk).

And another issue is price - small series production is the main reason GTA04 is so expensive.

That's what I thought. The idea that a bunch of guys would cook up a phone in their garage was just laughable to me. But I was wrong. The gta04 guys did it. They have no patent portfolio to protect themselves with, no money for things like FCC certification, no hope of getting the latest-and-greatest components, but by golly they made their own phone, and God bless 'um for having the nerve to do that. Golden Delicious might go out of business tomorrow, but you can be darn sure they won't abandon us to produce WP or Android phones.

Anyways no chances this will ever (unfortunately) leak: Nokia security has worked extremely hard to ensure no code leaks outside Nokia.
They closed all the development enviroments and wikis the morning the layoff happened even before the official announcements.

So, by now, most of the Meltemi code has been wiped away from the hard drives where was residing, end of story.

Was it you who posted this originally in almost the same wording on Tomi's blogpost?

Calm down, you know it's stored somewhere. They're gonna need to develop something to use once the Microsoft Nokia contract is over.

Haha, are you counting the days? Keep counting, but my guess is that we won't have no more Nokia by then.

Perhaps someone memorised it like The Book of Eli.

Nothing has leaked so far, and folks have been disgruntled at Nokia for their Maemo decisions for years. This decision will mean that the Harmattan folks and Meltemi folks will be vocal in the end over this; nothing will be leaked.
