Either Samsung is liquidating its stores, or promoting the Tab 7 big time.

$100 off of the Tab 7 for the first 500 facebook fans!

http://www.androidcentral.com/samsun...-fans-facebook

Here is how it works:

1. At 12pm EST, go to: https://www.facebook.com/SamsungMobileUSA

2. ‘Like’ the Samsung Mobile USA page to retrieve the coupon code and click ‘BUY NOW’ to purchase the device and redeem the coupon code.

3. Already a fan of Samsung Mobile USA? No problem! Click on the ‘$100 Promo’ located on the left side of their facebook page and click ‘BUY NOW’ to purchase a Samsung Fascinate and/or Samsung Galaxy Tab and redeem the coupon code. (the ‘$100 promo’ won’t appear until Samsung launches the sale)
Not a bad deal at all!

I know it's a total sidetrack.. but wow, I've been out of the Atari world for so long. I didn't realize it's moved on into the open-source OS realm too. :P Apparently, people are still updating the OS all the way up until this February of 2011 update here for SpareMiNT's MyAES (MiNT is a a TOS/GEM replacement for Atari ST/STe/TT/Falcon/etc., SpareMiNT being an RPM GNU based MiNT distro. Lots of screenshots too.): http://myaes.lutece.net/ And then there's FreeMiNT ...note that they slapped GNU on top of MiNT in both cases.

Not bad for ancient hardware--and kinda proves that you can DEFINITELY extend the usefulness and life of an old piece of hardware as long as you have ACTUAL fully open-source friendly hardware! Atari of olde is long gone, as well as support, but the community seems to keep it going. That's what you get when the company laid out all the specs for you and lets you access the hardware with excellent documentation to let you write your own drivers.

Very, very cool.

I wonder why more companies don't open hardware spec/drivers/etc up! The 'geek' demographic will have a field day with the tech, create new innovative ideas, and hey, they're not going to buy the latest device anyway. I doubt it would hurt business in the slightest. Just look at the nook colour -- altough I don't have hard numbers, I'm betting that many bought the device just to hack it. Had it been hacker friendly from B&N, they might have sold a few ebooks as well!

If they'd been smart, they would have sponsored a Nook Color Android distribution community and opened their own Nook app store so they could charge a percentage of the app sales like Amazon and Google, except you KNOW those Nook apps would be better suited to the Nook Color's design (higher resolution, denser dot-pitch and ONLY a home button)--so there would be an advantage to the Nook app store.

Indeed. Open up some work the community, cut development costs and create a movement. These days, it would set an impressive precedent. you could even offer discounts on future hardware to source contributors.

Very interesting. James Gosling, the father of Java, has been hired at Google:
http://www.itworld.com/open-source/1...shingle-google

"Through some odd twists in the road over the past year, and a tardis encountered along the way, I find myself starting employment at Google today. One of the toughest things about life is making choices. I had a hard time saying 'no' to a bunch of other excellent possibilities."
It pays to have visionaries, especially those with a proven track-record.

I wonder what his purpose will be?

Maybe to go back in time and make SURE Oracle's case fails in court against Google? He did mention a TARDIS in there somewhere, didn't he?

It's too bad Nokia didn't do similar--that is, try to attract talent and compete harder. Instead, they kept hiding behind the"Finnish culture" and made up a bunch of excuses that, honestly, should have been insulting to anybody of Finnish blood. Incredible.

Here in UK the ASDA store was selling them contract free for £299. I just went to buy one and see "Out of Stock".

I have set this as my Home page and fingers crossed the deal comes back. I won't miss it the next time round.

Are good quality 7" tablets slipping out of favour I wonder?

I'm not sure, but I'm hoping they'll still consider a good 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2 down the road.

I bet they will. 2M sold in 4 months is nothing to sneeze at, and should certainly be worth a release.
