Oh, the Pentium II 350 Mhz computer that I mentioned in my post? It's running openSuSE 11.2, the latest release.

So the N900 and the Cliq are being treated the same. I'm sure that makes N900 owners feel better.
What are fair support expectations for a smartphone like the Cliq? For a GNU/Linux computer like the N900? Six months? 1 year? 2 years?

The excuses are really getting worse aren't they? No android 2.1 -because of no dual core processor-, wtf? :P

Let's put the right context on this comment:
- Your PC is x86 but here we deal with ARM architecture. Long term support for ARM based products is a different topic.
- PCs currently sold still offer more or less the same user experience than your old PC based on a regular screen, keyboard and mouse.
- Did you buy that PC with openSuse or with Windows something inside? The question is: are you getting official updates from the vendor you got the PC or the OS from?
- If you got that PC with Windows and now you are relying on a free Linux distro, then the equivalent is to rely on plain open source MeeGo.

Um... I actually read the website and it says that the Cliq will be getting Android 2.1 and Flash. The quote that was pulled was from a user who had called several T-mobile stores and got mixed answers, half saying "yes", half saying "no".
I don't know if the Cliq users actually got their update yet, but Motorola has Android 2.1 listed for Q2 2010:

The biggest specific concern is that of technologies like QML and DirectUI/Orbit, or rather, will the same situation as for Java reappear, where one has to target lowest-common denominators which are usually at that point almost semi-deprecated. Synchronized platform releases could help this.

As you go on to other communities, remember to build them around politeness, respect, trust and humility. Be wary of poisonous people and deal with them before they end up killing your community.. Seen it happen to too many IRC channels, forums, open source projects.
