The price is great, but having experience with Acer, I would have reservations about the quality. Still, this is a new competitor for mid-level tablets that will help drive the price down, down, down.
Based on a couple quick searches, it's 1024x600 resolution (OK), no GPS(???), and 1530mah battery (???). I'm guessing you'd get around 2 hours of video watching if you're lucky.

I think I'll pass until some more definitive reviews/info come out. Even though I'm looking for a 7" tablet, the 10" Asus looks mighty tempting.

Yes, standard would be very nice. I think it goes beyond the dock connector, though. Consider that many devices have different dimensions, and even a subtle differences can make a dock somewhat problematic. However, all hope is not lost!

Here's what I would do:
1) Use PDMI. It's standard and capable of AV and Data using well-established 'standards' (HDMI/USB/et al.)

2) Instead of standardizing a 'dock', use a peg-and-hole standard to attach devices to a dock! Here are a few details.
  • The pegs would be on the dock itself and the device would have holes to accommodate these pegs.
  • There could additionally be standardized spacing between two pegs (eg 2 inches apart) engineered to be robust and standard across devices.
  • These holes could straddle the PDMI connector
  • Manufacturers could reinforce the hold that the peg fits in, for a snug and secure fit every time.
  • You could use magnets to fasten the docks pegs to the devices holes.
  • The pegs need not be thick, but could be quite thin, but sturdy (think of a slightly curved wall-plug prong). They should be more than capable of holding the device up without needing additional docking mechanisms.
  • The pegs could be a standard distance from the back of the device. This is important as while you may not know the thickness of the device, you can always reinforce the back of the device against the dock without requiring padding. This is very useful for a great many docks that have the devices back against something (eg. a car dock).
  • Cleverly devised docks could 'break off' the prongs (eg. magnets or a mount that could flex) in the event that too much torque is placed on the peg/hole connection. This would save both the dock and the device.
*I opted not to place the PDMI connectors on the pegs, because I believe that they should be very easy to implement by manufacturers, to ensure their use.


Voila. It doesn't get much more simple than pegs and holes, but the standardized docking implications are tremendous.


I forsee counter-top docks, bathroom mirror docks, wall docks, desktop docks, keyboard docks, speaker docks, notebook docks, car docks, etc, all without requiring a huge effort for furniture/vehicle/electronic manufacturers. Best of all, the system would reduce the size of docks tremendously. Plastic docks that fit around devices are not practical as they must be custom made and are huge.

Seriously. My only gripe is why, oh, why are they using last-years SoC. I know that these changes can't be made overnight, but you might think Sony with their resources, would be much more aggressive with their vision. Using an old SoC in tablet that's late to the market doesn't seem like a winning strategy.

This is especially perplexing in that they have been using Qualcomm's Snapdragon for the entirety of their Xperia line, and Qualcomm has some exciting devices upcoming. Le sigh.

Perhaps it has something to do with that Playstation Experience certification.

Yeah, thunderbolt seems like it *could* be good, but that might limit actual support from electronics manufacturers. Intel seems to be holding this tech close to its chest, and trying to use its weight to have this instantiated as a standard -- I have my doubts of the success of this port.

Personally I would keep it simple for this iteration of devices rather than trying to change to much all at the same time. I would rather have more electronic manufacturers implementing these docks in their devices than a little more bandwidth.

Anyway, this decision is to offer some protection protection to Android and Chrome in the future.

But as things stand today, one of a company’s best defenses against this kind of litigation is (ironically) to have a formidable patent portfolio, as this helps maintain your freedom to develop new products and services. Google is a relatively young company, and although we have a growing number of patents, many of our competitors have larger portfolios given their longer histories.

This is the coolest demo of object tracking that I have ever seen. Very generally useful, and incredibly fast.

I imagine that there's quite a bit of processing required, but I sincerly hope that ARM and SoC makers consider folding some of these algorithms into ultra-efficient DSPs, as this could be a fine addition to the modern mobile devices feature set.

Imagine this in Android? Ok, there it was.

One thing is certain, though. With the proliferation of cameras around, with this technology, the moment you show your face, you're tracked. It raises very interesting privacy implications, as well as terrifying war possibilities.

The whole time I'm reading your comment, it almost reads as if you're trying to imply a relationship with sizes. I'd avoid drawing a trail of ='s like that. heheh

THANK GOD! Finally, someone's doing something for us CDMA people! All these kernals and hacks so far have ALL concentrated on GSM (and I really don't like GSM, myself). More importantly, the CDMA versions (Sprint and Verizon) were the ones MOST harmfully crippled (no bt mouse, no bt keyboard, no cifs, etc.)--so we're the ones that needed it the most. Fantastic!

Very nice indeed.

There's no reason that the HC UI should be so slow. While the Tegra 250 hardware gives more leeway, basic graphics optimization should be a release requirement. I've seen stuttering even on the XOOM which is unacceptable.

Look at the SPB on the same hardware. It is a a far more sophisticated shell and runs smoother than the XOOM interface on much more capable hardware.
