Yeah, as Laughing Man said, just use your existing one while you build another one alongside it. What I am doing is building a massive new database in sqlite format using this script which is running right now on my utility server and building my DB for me off the tablet.

For some reason maemo-mapper was saving the maps as the old format, so I created the new as you suggested and it gave me the option to change the format. Now I am in the process of downloading zoom level 12 for the entire earth, about 2.5gb, and the device been at it all night and still going. Its not even at half yet. I wish I could do this on my laptop and then just copy the data over at a time like this.

Frz, use the download script I linked. That way you don't need to let your tablet do any of the work. Just start it up and let it run. I've pulled down some 4 million tiles already and it's still going. I'm doing the zoom levels for the entire US from 16 down to 8, with the Michigan/Ohio area zoomed down to 6 since that's the primary area I travel in.It took me a couple weeks to get it all (kept having to restart the script because of my crappy internet connection causing the script to repeatedly bomb out) but I finally got it all and have been testing it in stages as I went, and so far, so good.

lol. The script is for use on your PC to build maps, not your tablet. You build the map file on your PC using the script and then transfer the completed database to your tablet. It's also currently only for Google street, although it shouldn't take much to hack it for other uses and other repositories. As for the zoom levels, I've just found it best to do the even numbered zooms only. For one it's a lot less zoom levels to download, and two, unless you have a need for any zoom level higher than 16 or lower than 6, you should only need 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, and 6. The only time I've found that 2 and 4 come in handy is if you're adding a lot of POI's, but otherwise under practical driving use, they're really not that handy and take up a ton of space for something you really won't use that often.
