20min at saving time is not correct and wrong at least my N900 and MyPaint saves big painting quite fast.. It is true that it may take while when saving big files.. but example when I save "5megapixel N900 photo" which I am edited with MyPaint it takes only max. half minute. It depends a lot how many layers u have.. and memory of N900.

It seems we have some different experiences on the saving times. Perhaps this difference could be explained by firmware version, app version and such. But there could also be a difference in the time it takes to save a layered work file than to export it as a jpg.
Is it faster to export a flat jpg than to save as a layered workfile?
It sure would suck to have a reboot/shutdown during the save, since im guessing you donīt save that often if it takes 30 min

... oooh, that's not a bad idea ... so long as it doesn't reduce the quality, or flatten the open document that'd work well ...
