You may also consider installing ubuntu on an SD card for some CLI lovin' to round out Android's great library of apps.
Being as it won't be my primary phone (at least for a bit), it probably won't last more than an hour or two on the stock firmware. I'll be more than happy to post on my experiences with it. In general, the Galaxy S phones seem to be pretty solid, I don't think there'll be too many (if any) disappointments.

I'll certainly try out ubuntu. In fact it's already on an sd card in my S7. Haven't got it to boot yet, but that's probably due to the S7 running 2.1 and a slightly funky kernel. Only played with it for about half hour, haven't given up yet, just haven't had time to pursue it further.

Looking forward to getting it (next week?) and playing for a bit.

This is really, really, cool.

Panasonic is to release an in-flight entertainment system running Android:

http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/04/pan...inment-system/

As someone that travels more than average, this is quite a nifty feature. Air Canada has a wonderful in-flight system (economy class) that allows a good selection of music/movies on demand. This would be a perfect addition to similar systems, and with the power of Android you wouldn't need a separate system to run music and movies or even some productivity applications.

Open source, FTW. Try doing this with a closed solution. I would imagine that the library of titles would be tiny at best, or too expensive to be feasible.

Ars has a very Angry editorial on the Recent Andy Rubin blog post regarding fragmentation/honeycomb release:

Rather than give you my viewpoint, I'm interested in hearing yours.

Acer is taking this new business quite seriously.

Acer is determined to compete with price with the iPad2.

Methinks Acer is going to have to compete more than just price.

Well first off, if you're going to throw out the accusation of "falls far below the standard of openness", it'd be nice to see some quotes from Google illustrating what they promised as it was several years ago?

I can kind of understand where Google is coming from with their reasons for delaying a release. So long as they release it, the "openness" remains the same. Can they use it to strong arm partners? Sure. Can partners try to strong arm Google? Absolutely. Which side do you believe?

On the other side of the coin, if Google let anyone use the code, with any modifications they wanted, they'd destroy the Android image, and everyone would be clamoring about fragmentation ruining it.

Same situation with MeeGo. Is MeeGo less open than Android? Not everyone can use it (and call it MeeGo). You have (or will have) a specification that you have to meet to be called "MeeGo". Would everyone be happier if Google released the code (with a specification) and said you can use it, but you can't call it Android if you don't meet the requirements? Probably not.

Very good post. Love your perspective.

Anyone else care to weigh in?

Ayup! The state of your game (much like Angry Birds and most games) is in the app's accompanying DATA archive, while the SD card is probably just caching other data (not progress data).

Ars gets it, Andy either:
  • doesn't get it
  • is a liar
  • is delusional
  • is any combination of the above

It's clear that daperl and marxian, are anti-Android fanbois.

C'mon guys, how are we supposed to take you seriously with comments like this?

So pathetic. You should honestly be embarrassed.
