Sorry am I lost but so this will run the current Maemo 5 build that we all love and know? If this really does look and feel like an n900 and runs Maemo just as our current N900s do then by all means take my 1000 AUD

Not yet decided. Thanks for bringing it up, it seems I forgot to address this topic. What I think I've mentioned though: WLAN chips/modules are particularly hard to source when you want something "free" and semi-decent. Many chipsets nowadays require closed blob drivers in kernel space. Search the internet for softmac. For embedded we want a hardmac (chip with on board cpu and own firmware), if only for powersaving reasons.

No, that's not what I'm asking. I'm specifically asking whether the Neo900 will support wireless-N, which the N900 does not.

Exactly that's the plan :-D

I've been reading this thread for a couple of days, and while I have a lot of love for my N900 and the OS running it, one of my concerns with this project is whether the software will be able to keep up to really make this worth it.

My main concern is the MicroB browser, which seems to struggle more and more with modern web sites. Anything that uses a lot of Javascript libraries really slows down MicroB, and there doesn't really look like there is a proper 3rd party replacement, given that most browser developers have abandoned Maemo.

A secondary concern are clients for online services. Given that they regularly change their API, it can be a struggle to find who is still updating their client. I've had to switch my Twitter client a couple times this year, and the one I'm using right now the developer has pretty much said he's stopped all enhancement work.

While putting some fresh hardware into it might give some additional life to the platform, I really wonder if it will be worth it, particularly since some of the platform's issues will still be outstanding.

I'm not going to elaborate about microB's FOSS engine now, nor about RAM being main bottleneck that slows down browsers massively.
Just so much: of course nobody considers development of new software (versions) for a OS with a limited and shrinking number of devices it can run on.
Don't you think this might change when there are perspectives for the OS to develop and flourish thanks to brand new hardware available?
And actually, what would be the alternative? You're free to get a android or fruitphone any time. But that's not what we're talking about here. We're talking about a device that could run maemo5 too, but will happily run on android or debian or gentoo or SHR or QtMoko or any distro you want to port to it, if that serves you better. You can dual-boot and who knows, maybe some mad hacker even makes XEN (or any other virtualization) work on it. Then look at the 'alternatives', for example the Zoom-II which was not half as useable for actual daily phone purposes, but iirc cost 3 times as much. And it didn't really come with any dedicated OS that it supported. I think our Neo900 looks pretty shiny in comparison.

I think (in my very humble estimation) that all the "I-don't-know...and I'm-not-sure...that-this-is-such-a-great-idea..." posters should perhaps just wait for the final verdict after prototype testing and hw/sw wrangling is finished to see what the final product can actually do and it's practical forseeable and realistic potential quantifiable.

I'm not sayin that it isn't healthy to doubt or question...but give the guys a wee bit of breathing room and a chance to put it together 1st (at least) and then question it's viability once we can put the beast under the microscope...it may be that it doesn't meet with some opinions, hopes or needs...possibly the majority's needs...that's ok......whether it succeeds to little, middling, or great success...at this moment..this is a great moment...whether easy or hard the success may be..it really, really, really is all about daring and attempting to do more..to do better... ...and I bow low to the gentlemen for doing just that ...regardless of the outcome.

You forgot that we're already building resp designing the sibling, the original monster even got "mass"-produced in qty of 100+ **) and all are working happily, with the usual teething troubles prolly due to a few flaws in sw adaption left over to iron out. There are enough youtube videos showing "XY distro on GTA04" I guess *). It's not a question if we can do it, it's a question of how good and how economical we can do it. I bet on Nikolaus happily will ship you a working Neo900 prototype in ~5 months when you pay him ~15k EUR in advance.

O yes I watched a few of the gta04 distro videos..very cool......I am really impressed overall with what I've read and seen concerning the board in fact...in retro I wish I could have gotten a freerunner back when..... and I truly wish I could throw that 15000 eur. down for the 1st proto.
ah...if wishes were dishes I'd have a banquet we could all eat at...
frankly I think this is a great, great time for maemo...and how good or economicial it turns out ...yes... that is the bottom line...
but here is hoping it all turns out well.
