I've installed and mounted the debian file system. But when I type:

apt-get install r-base

it can't find the package. I'm not sure how to get apt-get to find the right repository.

@Rabilon: post the contents of your /etc/apt/sources.list from your debian rootfs just to be sure the complete set of repositories is there. Also, try to find it by using synaptic.

sources.list was empty. synaptic does not run. When I click on the icon, nothing happens.

I still can't do it, to install the debian on my nokia n800 with os2008 v.2 2007.51.3 the same messege appear (unable to download easy-deb-chroot Application package not found) and i tried to upgrade the os2008 to the latest os2008 but I couldnt do it with the Nokia Internet Tablet Software Update Wizard coz its telling me that i have allready the latest OS2008 v.2 2007.51.3
I hope that you can help with

@rabilon: so edit your /etc/apt/sources.list as follows
then apt-get update
then apt-get install r-base

That's really suspicious. /etc/apt/sources.list should not be empty if you used any of my rootfs tarballs. If you're using the minimal one, it may not have synaptic, but it certainly has the sources.list file. You're sure you mounted the empty image file and then untarred the rootfs into the image file?

Yes, I'm sure I followed the steps. I executed each of the four commands for mounting that were listed and didn't receive any error messages. I then used:

tar xjvf basic-debian-chroot-fs.tar.bz2 -C /debian

This took a while to uncompress and created a lot of entries.

Before uninstalling everything and starting over, I will add the information given by debernardis first and try apt-get again. Thanks.

Just one more thing, make very sure you are not updating the sources.list of your main maemo system! Make sure you have chrooted into Debian ("sudo debian") before changing your sources.list file or running apt-get.

Perhaps, just to be sure, open a "regular" terminal and check that /debian/etc/apt/sources.list is the file you edited, rather than /etc/apt/sources.list

If you add Debian repositories to your maemo sources.list, or you try to install Debian apps into maemo, you will completely hose your tablet.

I've got some idea related to turbo-deb.
For many applications 800 pixels in width is acceptable
but there is common issue of "home user with not so big monitor".
Vertical 480 causes problems - how could I get such thing as in standard linux xserver that viewable area is 800x480 but virtual desktop is bigger?
For example 800x800 or just "huge" like 1024x768?
I'm not sure how would it behave on n8x0 device but as far as I know in standard xserver scrolling takes place automatically with mouse movement near screen's edge.
BTW is there some ready-made usb mouse support in easy-turbo-deb?

ok, I'm going to apologize in advance and just suck it up when someone tells me to search the forums cuz I have and I get too many "debian"s popping up. Heres the problem. Installed fine, icons all show up. When I try to run any debian apps, I get a quick flash, and then nothing. I've tried several apps, all the same result. The only thing that I can catch is when I start LDXE it flashes the "log off" window. I haven't run Linux in years so I'm rusty on trying to do anything thru command line on my own. When someone has some time to point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.
