Well opensuse linux uses something similar in green which is one drawback i guess
I think technically that logo is a gecko though. I think something stylized and vectorized and from a different angle and orange would be distinct enough. Someone with more time and graphic skills should try to extend this idea a little, i think.
i would say maybe the newts head as side angle view arching up through the orange e of the maemo text or maybe have a bottom view with the maemo text like 'in' the orange and black belly pattern.

Oh, I saw just in google search blurb that its name was Geeko, so I just assumed it was a gecko, but yes you are right it is a chameleon after i read more. That was confusing
