Questions are in order:

What is the plan with regard to the future of Maemo and any migration to Meego? Are the communities going to merge? If not, is Maemo going to live on in as just a few people with their n8x0's and n900s talking on this forum?

Is there a "constitution" for the Council somewhere?

I really would like my questions answered that I posted back on page 5:

I like to visit this forum (really thats the extent of my interaction with maemo.org) to talk about my n900 and listen to other people talk about theirs. I like hearing news about Maemo. Sometimes I have started discussions about linux and GNU at large, however misplaced they may be here. I had an n800 two years ago and I liked it alot. After I sold it I left ITT. Then I got the n900 and came back to the community.

I love my n900, I'm glad I bought it. I use it every day and there isn't another phone on the market that I would consider trading it for, but I know there soon will be. I know that someday (probably Decemberish) I will join the ranks of people who post the "Goodbye Maemo" threads that people find so annoying.

This is who I am with respect to Maemo.org. Now:

How important am I to the Council and the community at large? What is expected of me and what should I expect of the Council? Does the Council even care about me? Should I just shut up and let other more active people worry about the work you all do? Do I have any standing to even complain?

These are legitimate questions I have.

What proprietary applications, if any, will be available to each of vanilla MeeGo on the N900 and MeeGo-Harmattan on the N900 doesn't appear to have been fully determined yet. At least, no definitive announcement has been made. There are both legal and technical barriers that must be overcome. At the very least, the Ovi Store should be available on MeeGo-Harmattan.

In terms of the legal barriers, there's little direct involvement the community can have. Polite showings of customer desire for specific applications probably couldn't hurt though, and one need not be a Community Council rep to organize such an effort.

We're not even the only community who would be thrilled to have, for instance, a direct, accept-the-EULA-and-go download of the Adobe Flash plug-in for ARMEL. Beagleboard, Touch Book, Debian ARM, Ubuntu ARM, and other users would likely flock to that cause.

As for the technical barriers, that's where more support for hardware adaptation effort being carried out Stskeeps and others would go far. After all, if that effort fails, the legal barriers become quite irrelevant. Again, one need not be a member of the Community Council to make a difference. Being a coder certainly helps, but there's likely plenty of organizational, documentation writing, bug triaging, and other work that can be done.

Not by any forced, "we're copying the user database over now" way, no. If members of the maemo.org community move to the community growing over at MeeGo.com, then that shall happen by each individual's choice.

Just looked at that bug.. there is a (kind of) workaround to somewhat do this (I do it currently with my SD card).

I took a look here. You can mount the Meego raw image directly on your Linux desktop, and then simply copy the rootfs to a partition on your N900.

Now, I think the partition has to be /dev/mmcblk1p1 in order for the kernel to find and boot it properly, but this at least allows you to rearrange your own partitions a bit and keep the bulk of your data on /dev/mmcblk1p3 or p4 or something and just keep 1-2GB on p1 and some swap on p2.

At least this way you aren't wiping your SD card every time you want to update to the latest weekly image.

Since Ovi store will be available, my (our) next biggest concern is Ovi Maps , afaik Navteq is owned by Nokia so I dont see any legal issues and for the technical well N900 has internal GPS and I doubt they will make changes to it in MeeGo phone, and our beloved topic Flash 10.1, it is technically possible since couple of moths ago Abode stated that minimum requirements for Flash 10.1 is Cortex A8 , so now it comes only to legal aspect ,no?

From what I remember at the time of the initial discussions:

No. Nor would a merger really be that conducive of a match I think. MeeGo is (right now) primarily focused around OS hackers, slowly moving on to application developers and enthusiasts. maemo.org has a large end-user segment that doesn't really have a place there, at least, as far as I can see.

It's going to live on in its current form for as long as it is useful. I imagine that it *will* lose critical mass at some point and die off, though, unless things drastically change pace (through new blood etc) or focus - and when that point hits, I imagine the lights will probably be turned off, as there's no need keeping them on with nobody home.

The purpose (I guess what would pass for a constitution) has been outlined already in this thread: http://wiki.maemo.org/Community_Council - though it could probably use some additions of some of the things that have come out of this thread.

I guess you need to ask specific questions to get specific answers, though.

Well, as a community - where do we want the discussion to be once a usable MeeGo is available for the N900?

The questions to and for the council would be better off in the Ask the Council thread. This one has gotten too noisy, and had a different purpose anyway.

Depends who you're talking about.

If you're going to be contributing apps (or code to existing apps) within MeeGo, then it's most natural to do that where it lives: meego.com

If you're an application developer looking to build on top of MeeGo, then you'll probably be involved in meego.com somehow too, at least for things like API documentation.

If you're an end-user, I don't think meego.com is going to have a great deal for you directly, especially now.
