Here's a neat demo of wireless TV streaming to the Galaxy Tab:

Very neat, though the UI looks like it could have been simplified tremendously. Too many clicks and screens to do something simple.

I'm not even going to touch this form factor until the next generation of ARM SoCs hit the market. Right now, it would make a severely under-powered laptop (though very useful if you just stay in Android all day). For me, I need Ubuntu for my processes, and this device would choke on some of the processes I run.

The upcoming cortex A15s clocked at ~2GHz will give low power laptops a run for their money with smartphone-esque power usage, and the next generation GPUs will put pressure on integrated ones from intel. When these hit, tablets/transformers will look a lot more comparable to laptops.

It's not there yet. But when it is, I'm saying goodbye to intel and getting an ultra-thin/ultra-light/ultra-cheap transformer-type setup without even thinking about it.

Asus is talking as though this line will exist beyond the initial sku, which is comforting. I also expect them to sell enough to warrant future products, as well as competitor products.

It looks as if the next version of Android may be 3.1!

Here's hoping that this is a major bug-fix version as well as optimization. I would also like to see this release work on something other than a tablet!

Like to know how stuff works?

Download the How Stuff Works app fresh out of the oven for Android:

Very cool stuff indeed.

The downside? Many weird permissions, which make me a bit nervous to install. (eg. GPS... wtf?)

Very good points. They certainly won't be suitable for more than basic computing. But, I think they'll more than adequate for those basic tasks.

I'm thinking perhaps openoffice type document editing (mobile office stuff is getting better). "Desktop" surfing without needing a to change settings. Running some more obsure / older programs not available in traditional mobile versions.

I'm also thinking a mobile/home media server. You could do a lot with linux, the hdmi out, usb hard drive, and a home stereo system. Think usb remote controls. Pick it up and go, taking some of your favorite/new media with you.

Notebook replacement for power users? Not yet. For average users? Quite possibly. In another generation? We'll still be looking for just a little more power.

But, I'm mostly talking about potential, and I've learned my lesson there.

Actually, this raises a very interesting thought that I hadn't considered. VNC.

If the GUI latency is low enough, I could have a beefy computer sitting in a closet at home, and use the transformer as a way to access it. Of course, I would only consider this if the latency was low enough not to be extremely annoying, as the transformer would be my terminal.

Something tells me, though, that this would drain battery faster than normal (hyper active WiFi), and the latency would not be good, if streaming a video fullscreen (for example). But perhaps a comfortable compromise can be made.

Does anyone have experience with VNC? If VNC is a viable solution in the home, I would be very interested in trying it out with this device. Even on the road, this might be a boon. Ultra-high latency yes, but access nonetheless! I wonder how effective it could be (this is actually quite an exciting prospect).

Ive used VNC in various forms for years. Recently mostly to manage my SageTV server from my normal desktop.

For this kind of access, copying files, editing files etc VNC works fine on a local network. As soon as the screen starts changing a lot, streaming video, flash, etc, VNC is just not effecient enough even on a local network.Edit: actually small displays are OK, but forget full screen SD resolution stuff and there's no sound of course!

Also tried VNC over the internet. This lags a lot even for basic tasks. Mind you Ive only got an ADSL connection with only 40k upload at the end Im controlling.

There are more effecient solutions than VNC though. One Ive been using at work recently is Citrix. Works well, bit complicated for home use of course, but you can arrange for things like streamed video and flash to actually be decoded on the local machine rather than having to transfer the decoded, and so much larger, screen from the other end.

Thanks a bunch! This is great information.

It would be nice if there was an alternate open system that optimized this sort of thing. I suspect that with video compression, progressive resolution and specifically sending sections of the screen that have changed (omitting the ones that haven't), it may be possible to stream a high quality desktop on a very small amount of bandwidth.

I am of course assuming that VNC is a brute-force approach to sending a screen (which is probably incorrect). Still, if citrix is smoother, it suggests that there is room for VNC to improve.

Well VNC does use compression, but it is of course a relatively small amount. A decent high level of compressionn takes time which causes lag in the displayed image.

Hmm! It appears there is a citrix client for Andriod
Ill have to give that a try sometime after 9th May (when my Eee Pad Transformer arrives) Might try Nitdriod before then though!
