eMMC: Isn't that the solid state drive inside (hardware)?
Corrupt eMMC would result in a hardware failure in need of a warranty replacement.
Same as a corrupt SD/MMC Card. Some just die and can't be repaired, which is what I see as being corrupt.
If it was just software that had corrupted files in the /root somewhere, then that may very well be the end users fault.
Something may have been installed which was not designed for 1.2?
