I find it interesting. The main concern I would have is discoverability. Users might just perceive it as arbitrary/random behavior

I guess it would also cause issues with users having to care where they do their kinetic swipes.
Yes, pretty much like what you said.

I don't think it will cause more confusion than it is right now as some applications support kinetic scroll, some applicaitons might use scroll bar. When I went back to 5800 (not the lastest firmware supporting kinetic scroll), I tried to do kinetic scrolll on it .

The scroll bar on 5800 is not that wide, and actually I think it's a good size, certainly doesn't need to be as wide as some pictures above. If want to make it less confusing, can have a semi-transparent wider scroll bar shows up when the user drag around the scroll bar.

And when I use other apps on N900, I tried to do the zooming like in built-in web browser, but to my disappoinment, none of them use the same gesture including Nokia's own Ovi Maps.
Not sure if an API has been provided for that, but Nokia should have standardize the gestures and provide the API for all applications

there does need to be a way to scroll faster without so much flicking.

what about an off to on screen scroll bar?
enter the screen from the right and the small transparent bar becomes wider and a thin line showing the end of the scroll area apears to allow scrolling like mcdull described. for microb a swipe from off screen to the edge of the scroll area would do what it currently does.

The scrollbar is useless for short lists. If you miss it so much, simply scroll on the side of the screen - it's not like having a scrollbar on a touch screen phone is pure torture for your thumb as you always have to reach for that that narrow ant yet space eating part of the screen.

The scrollbar is useless for very long playlists or documents aswell as more and more office mice begin to have a kinetic wheel.

The only thing a scroll bar is good for are medium sized documents eg. 10-20 pages (on a phone).

The decission should ultimatley belong to the developer, but using it in most situations instead of kinetic = fixism/narrow mind.

I like your idea

@bec
I disagree about medium and short lists.

Lets say you have 20 Greatest Hists albums within 150 Folders.

You will have to flick a couple of times to get where you want and might go past an have to go back.

draging a scrollbar would make it easier.

its like removing the scrollbar from a browser and tell the users to use page up and page down on the keyboard and not be narrow minded ;-)

They should fix the kinetic scrolling and everything would be ok.
I don't like how they implemented it:
First: you can swipe as fast as you can and it will move as far/fast as medium fast swipe.
Second: frame rate is low, it should be much higher and smoother so we are able to see all the content which scrolls, not parts of it. There is a bug for that (8017), but they said "some customers are just not satisfied with frame rate, but that isn't a problem at all". So, choppy Photos is not a problem, or choppy Contacts?
Third thing is inconsistency. Rubber (bounce) effect is in Browser, Conversations, Contacts, More...(menu) etc, but not in Photos and Media player, and some apps like Calendar have and don't have it in the same time (for ex. Agenda has bounce effect, but Week doesn't, and Month doesn't have kinetic scrolling at all).
Then, there is inbuilt app like PDF Reader which doesn't have kinetic scrolling at all.
I mean, who was the project manager? Because it looks like he was payed for not doing his job.

Here is what it could look like when you swipe from the right outside to the inside and get scrollbar.

I think on some applications like address book there are better solutions then a scrollbar. See here http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=44269

I'd have to disagree with that Bec. When the list is long it's not so much the scroll bar but the scroll arrows that I'd find useful. having to swipe 10 times to get to the bottom of a long list is a little annoying. whats worse is that the N900 to me doesn't promote closed keyboard, touchscreen only, controls and yet at the same time doesn't allow you to use the up and down keys to scroll through a list.

@all

Let me tell you about something I had yesterday. I backed up my photos on my N900 to also have them with me all the time.

I have about 7000 photos in 43 folders.

I was searching for a photo and did not know when it was taken. So I set my Image viewer to Show all Photos.

Try to go to top with 7000 photos and I tell you kinetic scrolling just fails. You can flick your finger till your children are allmost grown up.

So there a scrollbar would just make life so much convenient.

I have added a third solution at http://maemo.org/community/brainstor...tic_scrolling/

It actually just a combination of #1 and #2

you have a small scrollbar defautl (space is allready reseverd - just missing the functionality)

If you swipe from the right you will get the large fingerfriendly semi transparent scrollbar.

Feel free to vote here http://maemo.org/community/brainstor...tic_scrolling/

An ugly scrollbar to me is better then no scrollbar at all :-)
