Attached is the log file from my last try - hardware decoding was enabled but panucci still just exits sometimes.

Just posted an updated testing version, 0.3~pre0.4-1.
It doesn't fix the two bugs we've found thus far, but if you're French or happen to enjoy looking at very verbose languages we now have a French translation of Panucci thanks to Philippe!
To test, you can run panucci like so: LC_ALL=fr_FR panucci
If you happen to be using a French language already, it should *just work* by launching panucci from the menu.

Anyway, I have a hacky fix for the meantime which drastically speeds up the queue's "get_item" function (which turned out to be the real culprit). It still might not be as fast as it used to be but you shouldn't have to wait a minute to load a gigantic playlist.

This is great, hardly noticeable from the old version. Still beats kagu or canola start up times (and those apps scan all the tags and cover art with a helper script before I even launch them).

I made a very simple player which uses the exact same pipeline as panucci does and I can't seem to get it to crash, perhaps you'll have some luck...
Could you please try download the player ( wget http://slexy.org/raw/s20Z6xPwAU -O simple_player.py ) and running it with a bunch of files:

But no, I can't crash this simple player.
I tried it with multiple folders and especially with the files that crashed the last test-versions of panucci.

Hey neat! I installed your test version of Panucci (0.4-2) and I LOVE the new layout and features and it seems to work brilliantly! I'm especially glad to see the working pause D-pad center key. (Oh GOD I missed that!)
The only two things I might ask for, one a fix the other a feature request:
1) Using the D-pad left and right, it jumps MUCH too far. Can it be tuned to be short-jump buttons (or have an option to make them short-jump?)
2) A toggle option to automatically remove files from the playlist and/or delete the files from the filesystem after playing them. (This would be VERY useful for things like audio books or hourly podcasts from CNN, for instance.. thusly freeing up the space as soon as they're finished.. I always end up doing this manually and it's a pain when there's a series of them after a long drive or workday).
Maaaybe a 3)? When fullscreened, make the tabs a little more finger-friendly? (Alternatively, make the D-pad up and down switch between the PLAYER mode (up) and PLAYLIST mode (down)
I'm MUCH more likely to use the D-pad, myself, since it's more tactile than looking at and aiming at a touchscreen with my finger to home in on a choice--even if I'm driving or working, I find the D-pad is preferable since I don't even have to look at the screen.. and during walking or exercising, it's damned ergonomic! The N800, anyway. heheh
