@qole, can you give me an idea if you are surpassing your 500MB limit now, and what your typical usage is? For obvious reasons, I am now looking into a data plan ...

Not even close. I barely hit 190. But I use wifi at home and at the office, and the Fido/Rogers EDGE is slow and not useful for VoIP and such...

Looks like the full force of Fremantle in Canada will be delayed further until the Wind of change meets CRTC approval.

Do you think that if Wind and or Videotron turn their switch on for the N900 that Rogers will surely try to?

Anyone else here on Fido prepaid? Two days ago, they started (with very little/no fanfare) the option to buy for $1 24-hour unlimited on-device browsing.

They probably are guessing that no smartphone user is using a prepaid plan, but this is a great option for occasional data users...

Still, I'd want them to allow tethering (accepting some reasonable data limit) so I can use my N800 with my 5200 as bluetooth modem.

The different data vs browsing plans are really confusing, maybe that just means accessing a few select web site through a proxy?

Then again, DNS bridge can be fun ... (nstx, dns2tcp, ...)

I tried it, and could access many websites from my 5200's built-in (crappy wap) browser. The built-in IMAP email client worked as well (connecting to imap.google.com). My self-written little J2MEE app (for looking up Montreal STM timetables) worked as well.

HOWEVER: While I managed to go to m.google.ca and download both mobile gmail and mobile Google maps (together about one meg worth of data - without additional charge past the $1 for the day) neither of the apps could access the network properly. Apparently I need some different configuration, but so far, I couldn't get it to work. (and of course, now the 24hrs are up, I'm not gonna try it again until I need it for some reason!)

So going pre-paid you get unlimited data plans for 30$ a month, not bad ...
I'm actually on a 15$+tx 50min plans with free voicemail (and 50min free the first year which ended just now) ... I might consider going contract-less... I'd have to factor the costs.

Then again, EDGE speed, i'll never go over 500MB for ssh / IM i guess...

Vidéotron, as much as i totally hate you, where are you?
