Scouts. A "build a den" thing.

Seeing right through the semi-transparent molted exuvia of a cicada. Not an etymologist, but I have a google machine and am gonna call this one a Neotibicen linnei, an annual cicada. When they emerge from the earth where they've spent the last year or 5 sucking on roots, they climb onto something vertical in order to shed the shell that protected them in their underground environment. Often found on tires and trash cans, this one is in the much more natural setting of a nodding onion, itself an interesting plant because it blooms in summer rather than spring like most allium family members.

Edit: Forgot (again) to say Xperia X, Sailfish X, Piggz Advanced Camera

My post this month. Nothing special, just a hole in a very old wall.
Xperia X and Sailfish stock photo app, no edit.

31... 30... 29... I believe that time has cometh.

Here are the entries for this month. After a slow start, there are actually quite a few of them. Well done, folks!

1. peterlenchen, XA2 (SFOS cam!), no edit

2. catbus, Jolla1 stock, picture resized with gimp

3. Fellfrosh, Proš, Advanced Camera, sharpened and resized with darktable

4. Pentona, Xperia 10 Plus, unedited

(An interesting observation: all the above pictures are in portrait. But the next one will break the streak )

5. gryllida, phone unspecified

6. Wikiwide, Fxtec Pro1
(Sorry for the upside down picture. The TMO picture viewer sucks )

7. nonsuch, Xperia XA2, SailfishOS stock camera app, "lightly killed" in GIMP

8. pichlo, Jolla 1, resized in Paint

9. kinggo, XZ2, stock camera, resized in GIMP

10. robthebold, phone unspecified Sailfish X on Xperia X, Advanced Camera, not edited

11. eson, Xperia X and Sailfish stock photo app, no edit
(It should be rotated 90° clockwise and appears as such if you click the image to follow the link. The TMO picture viewer sucks )

Voting ends on midday (UTC+1) of Saturday, 1 August 2020.

Some really good entries this month. I am having a tough time choosing the winner.
My favourites are:
  • 3. Fellfrosh. You stole my idea. I was thinking about a view through a glass, bottle or demijohn of something. But my background would look nothing like yours. How can your place look so neat and tidy?
  • 7. nonsuch. You presented three pictures and took my recommendation to choose the competition entry. Feeling responsible is only part of the reason. That picture is really good.
  • 9. kinggo. A nice, tempting look through the bicycle wheel spikes, with the additional see through the railway power lines at the background. Excellent composition, lighting and colours. I wonder who held the bike while you were taking the picture.

And my vote this month goes to... 9. kinggo.

Sorry, nonsuch. Your entry is excellent and nearly won my vote, but kinggo's triggered something in me that reminded me of my teenage years. You cannot argue with sentimentality

Thanks Pichlo for the great summary.

It's a bit shame we've had 2 entries which either not specifying the phone or which one to enter...

I vote for 2. Catbus this time. Very nice catch seeing through the rainbow / water.

Just so you don't get the impression i forgot about your theme, no.
I just failed while trying too much /o\

Below attached the attempt of seeing through an actual sigma macro lense with the Proš.
But i never got it right in too many attempts. Should have discarded the idea...

Great ideas and entries everyone!
My vote is on #4 Pentona with another stunningly simple compostion. So my question is answered, your colored photos look just as artistic than the B+W one you posted.
I really would like to be able to do such simple yet striking shots.

My not entry:

I still like my own entry best but my vote goes to 8. pichlo - not so much for the quality of the picture (white balance is too cold for my taste) but for a fascination with children's architectonic creativity, an almost chaotic, fractal-like structure, more grown than built.

...see, no hard feelings

Honorable mention for fellfrosch's Double Rainbow!
