@pichlo
You are absolutely right.
And if my memory does serve me well it was Nokia who started with the N9/MeeGo with such dumbness.
And Jolla copycatted that instead of system wide copy/paste

Ideas?
Not exactly your question, but :

- Have you tried running a native app instead, such as Pure Maps ? I find it not bad at all. The navigation works decently, and the author is responsive here on forums and on the github issue page.

- It can even work with off-line maps from OSM Scout Server : you have your very own OpenStreetMaps server running on your smartphone and apps such as PureMaps or Laufhelden don't need to be online to display maps. (Note: a big uSDHC card is recommended. Also, I'm not 100% happy with OSM Scout Server search function, you might decide to configure your Pure Maps to use something else).

This won't help you use HERE maps, but it will still work nicely as a we to get *some* maps.

----

Now to got back to your question, there HERE app crashes might be due to some missing Google Play or Google Maps services.

e.g.: I needed to steal com.google.android.maps from an official google device, because otherwise an app using geolocalisation kept crashing.
Tutorials regarding installing official Google Play, or MicroG opensource replacement might be a source to find how to add missing services

Look at that answer to see how to watch the logs of an Android application, and see if there's something meaningful (= an error message that you could copy-paste into Google to find on stackoverflow :-P ) that happens during the crash.
That's how I discovered my missing service mentionned above

It's on Openrepos (Storeman is the only client that works: https://openrepos.net/content/osetr/storeman)

7. Openrepos - can see there should be a jolla store app called storeman, but not able to find it.
How does one access openrepos to get to apps like Pure Maps?

You may have to go to Settings App > Untrusted Software to enable the installation of software from outside the Jolla store

That would be everyone's preferred option but no, you use a different app manager (Storeman or - now obsolete - Warehouse).
