WE SERIOUSLY NEED TEXTRAT(our homie) to shed some light on this topic...

I'd prefer a micro-dvi-out over a video out. For one, we still have different video formats in different countries, making for more complexity to serve all of Nokia's markets equally. DVI, on the other hand, is standard across all countries, isn't it?
Serving different video formats is no problem, the N95 and N93 have software settings for PAL/SECAM and NTSC, which covers pretty much all television sets in the world. The phones also have settings for widescreen and standard shape screens.

As far as I know older TVs don't have DVI inputs, whereas normal TV Out would work on a huge range of sets (though I'm not an expert on this so maybe I've misunderstood?).

This is a standard part of the OMAP 2420 (i.e. the N800 has the hardware too), it's just that we lack drivers for it (FYI it's called the PowerVR MBX).
I didn't know that!

If that's the case, is there any real reason why Nokia shouldn't add TV Out to future models? (Or even current N800s if all the hardware including the cable socket is already in place?)

Older sets do not have DVI inputs, no. But a DVI out that includes DVI-A signals can use a DVI to Video cable, which can be used to feed a TV with an RCA-in video plug.

Like I said, DVI, if all signals are implemented, can feed to DVI (digital), VGA, HDMI (minus sound), and analog video. But, HDMI can only be converted to DVI (digital). DVI, with all parts of it implemented, is a lot more flexible.

So, a mini-DVI connector, if fully implemented, would be ideal, in my opinion. Get sound from the headphone jack, and get whichever kind of video you need from the mini-DVI connector.

I'm not quite sure what the advantage of DVI is over the N95's setup. All TV sets with DVI also have composite or scart inputs, and sets without DVI almost all have composite or scart inputs too.

Thinking about it though, I suppose DVI's ability to connect to monitors as well as TVs would increase compatibility, but are you sure DVI could connect to as many TVs as the N95's method?

However, putting those discussions aside for a second, looking at this from a getting-it-into-production point of view, Nokia already has the N95 and N93 TV Out system up and running, and it works well. There seem to be no snags with it.

If they're using the same TV Out-capable chip and custom 3.5mm socket in the N800, it seems by far the quickest and easiest option to just implement this already-tried-and-tested setup on an upcoming tablet and/or the current N800.

What I'd really like is "SNAP computing", as described here:
http://people.freedesktop.org/~jg/Papers/ols2005.pdf

That would allow wireless remote display. Unfortunately, it'd require support from the display...

A better introoduction to SNAP computing: http://www.hpl.hp.com/techreports/20...-2005-113.html

Wish I could, but I can't. Try seeing if Quim or Ragnar are able to talk about it.

Composite output like the N95 has (looking from pictures of the cable it uses) probably has an effective resolution of about 640x480 max. Anything above that will be blurry, even on LCD screen.

A DVI signal should be able to carry 1920x1200\1080 with no problem. HDMI also.

Does anyone else think it's slightly ironic that people want to tether down the 'wireless internet tablet' with wires?

Not that it's a bad idea, but the N800 is really a hands on device. Even with a bluetooth keyboard, I still find myself having to poke and prod at the device to do things. So I'd have to agree with the poster who wisely said it'd be great for things like media slideshows, but not much else.

There is no real reason not to add TV out since it is supported by the HW. It would not be any more complicated than including the drivers in the next firmware and adding connections. IMHO, one of the best value/cost decisions they could make.

Even though DVI or HDMI is understandingly preferable to some, it would take too much to implement.
