Yes, I should have clarified , it does charge over USB with 1 single cable, and can be sync'd with the same cable but with an extra small mini to micro adapter cable.

See this post for the details on the cables.

What is this 'lock in of iTunes and iTunes synchronisation'?
Several applications can put tunes on an iPhone/iPod, and noone has to use iTunes synchronisation if they don't have to. I have an iPod - I have never used iTunes synchronisation (as I put on songs from many computers).
Correct me if I am wrong, since I really dont use an iPhone... but

To begin with, just to activate your iPhone you need to get in thru Itunes software. What happens to Linux users who don't happen to have iTunes installed ?

To install/manage any application, again iTunes is your gateway.

The forthcoming Apple App store for iPhones and iTouch is baked into iTunes.

To install ringtones from your music collection, iTunes provides the facility to convert (dont know if externally converted ringtones are supported on Iphone).

So its not just a matter of copying mp3's and videos. After all, the iPhone surely isn't limited to be a glorified mp3 player. At least I hope not.

When I first activated my iPod, I was in the states, a long way from my computer, so I asked them in the store how to activate, and did it there in the store.

my iPod is jailbroken, so all my application instal is from the instal application which is on the device. It is like the IT version but it works very well.

I have never installed a ringtone on any phone, and never will so I don't know or care how ring tones are installed (although I would be very happy if it was very hard to do on any phone, to stop people putting stupid loud ring tones on their phones that they leave on their desks at work and wander off!).

I don't have an iPhone, as in the UK the plan is far too expensive for me, and through a provider that I don't want to go to (and they don't have 3G, which is not something that is any good here), so I am not defending it as such, just that if you are going to come up with an argument, it is more persuasive if it doesn't sound you are going for the holy war angle.

Off topic:

But how do you transfer songs from different computers without itunes??

Is that a third party software. Is that legal according to apple??

I don't generally transfer songs without iTunes, as I love iTunes, and had it on my computers long before the iPod existed. However, you can use other applications which are third party software that work on a variety of platforms and wikipedia list quite a lot of managers. I once used a different manager to transfer stuff at work (that went on a USB key)
I don't understand what you mean about legal - what you use to transfer songs to your device is your own business, what do apple have to do with it?

okay my question is how do you transfer songs from two different computers to the ipod with or without using itunes. The moment i connect the ipod to itunes it asks me to sync to my library and the same thing happens when i connect to my friends library. But is there a way without hacking to have songs from two different computers at the same time??

Software analyst I know just bought a 32gig iTouch and is goofy happy about it.
But for power-users I would say the N800-810's are in a whole other league above in terms of real computing capability.
The thing my friend loves with the iTouch is perfect functioning, no glitching, and useful relevant apps. (some web based I have found also).
Nokia runs promo videos etc promoting the paradigm of lifestyle and business functionality. Yet here we are still quibbling about a truly decent functioning "proper looking" PIM.
The sales multiplier is in the domain of daily organization(ie business/lifestyle).

How much music can one listen too? How many slide shows do we spend time looking at or gaming? How about something like "TimeWhiz"(palm) for projects clients and billings, how about a 'Brain Mapper' or Life Balance kind of thing? All kinds of clever web apps sprouting up targeted to the apple product yet most I have seen are free. A good number are easily compatible with our browser on the nxxx's.
My point without presenting too many examples is to focus on diverse quality end user apps.
That's how the apple movement is capturing the mass appeal and thus the sales(which is what this all is really about). Palm did this quite well too, over the years but I'm sorry I'm not 'monkey wrenching' my N800 to run them in that PalmVM.

If we can't make the input method like handwriting a whole lot better, why not tweak the keyboard layouts to something I saw from a Windows Mobile guy who modded a layout in standard program to create a "FITNALY" keyboard? Voila, superior input to help with better faster text use and business inputs on the fly.

Again just a point to showcase the potentials of our platform in addressing real functionality appeal. It seems our platform needs to swipe a few key ideas from the others and showcase our system's ability. I love the larger screen and the more classy casing of the N series. My Palm Tx was good in the pocket like Apple, for quick grabs, but is just too old, too small now and lacking full abilities.

We have the right size, good screen, strong enough cpu, we just need to grab the end user with the same kind of positive first impression software ideas.

Usually I am at work, wich has nice wifi connection, and at home I am with wifi. When I visit my parents place, it's plane old GPRS so it really doesn't matter what I could possibly in the right circumstances get.

It's the matter of availability for me. What comes to the iTunes thing, it's not a bad thing for me. I have used it for many years now with my iPod, and it's excellent.

Also the car issue: I have no way to connect my n800 to my car stereo easily. But I do have nice iPod connector in my glove compartment. Why not use that?

Also about the calendar. I would have to get my phone, switch on the BT, tether, open online calendar, make changes for that. No way hose.

In my touch I just make changes, and with next sync it will be on my Google calendar, and my Macbook. What more does one need. And like I said, I am not selling my n800, I am just using it less often.

iPhone has it's shortcomings, especially with flash etc. But usually I can cope with that. I think I will be one happy camper.

Yeah, the PIM aspect is really a sore spot for me as well. It's the one feature that makes me lust after an iPod Touch. Nokia has SyncML on how many of their devices? They can't port that to the NIT's evolution data services? People retort that the nokia's are a full computer... well Linux has had PIM for years and none of them have transitioned to the NIT successfully ( I have honestly tried to use GPE and Pimlico and neither can even support the most basic PIM functionality without crashing or being overly cumbersome ).

It's depressing really that the only PIM to show promise on the NIT is google + gears.

The killer feature for me on the n810 is the ability to teather & VoIP (not necessarily at the same time). If the touch ever gets either wrapped up I may have to seriously reconsider the Touch again. The iPhone is just far to expensive for my taste once the contract pricing is included.

N8xx isn't a device for serious PIM atm. Everything other is blandish.
