Exactly, on Maemo it is a bug remaining open, because the system provides a mechanism for it to restart properly at a specific time.

This should be added to bug #71 if it isn't already.

Of course, someone might need to offer to develop it...

Nokia doesn't allow to change the icons in the left bar. It will always display the Internet and Contacts icons, whether you want them or not.
Not entirely correct. The UI will always want to display two taskbar plug-ins plus the application menu in the top half of "task navigator" area, but which two plug-ins are displayed is configurable via the "panels" control panel applet.

As far as I know the only other plug-in available at the moment is the "hello world" one, but do give it a try to see what I mean.

It's not a big deal, but if people know about how to customize the left bar, I'd like to know.
Someone would have to write a task navigator plug-in with the functionality you want first :-( Documentation for that is here...

Hey Ima, this sounds fascinating. First of all, I was wondering where the 'hello world' was 'supposed' to fit, so this makes sense. It'd sure be neat if we could design plug-ins for the 'task navigator'! Even tho I am not a programmer, it opens the door, so to speak, for someone who is. Anyone listening?

BTW, though, I was not able to give it a try, as you suggest, because I don't see a way to add the plug-in on the 'panels' control. Howz that done?

To the bug nay sayers... Yes, I know that the Close/Minimize functionality of GPE Calendar is not documented as a bug. Likewise, I know that the GPE maintainers stand by the decision to keep this functionality (for the obvious reasons stated above). But, usability-wise (not to mention being completely out-of-alignment with typical computing standards) is it, imho, a bug. That is why I called it a bug.

Seconding timsamoff. The behaviour is extremely annoying and apparently Pidgin has adopted this horrible idea as well.

Still no way to remove Contacts tab?

That "feature" is probably the most annoying I've ever seen and bugs me every time I'm using my IT...

I use Pidgin for IM and it's a lot better simply because:
1) It allows me to see contact list in one click and virtually no wait.
2) It doesn't have to take an icon in status bar OR tabs (you decide).
3) And it works with virtually everything.

To prove how Contacts tab is useless:
1) Takes 2 clicks and at least 2 seconds just to check contact list.
2) For some strange reason, IM-email isn't the same as email-email, so even if you want to write a quick email to someone in contact list, you'll probably still have to type the address manually...

So far I haven't found use for "Contacts" tab except for "View e-mail inbox"... and that I can easily do from "Applications" tab.

I understand that it could be useful to someone who uses the default e-mail, IM and SIP client at the same time, but there should be an option to at least hide the tab that we don't find useful...

---

There. Rant over. I feel much better now.
It'll probably take at least 1 year for Nokia to provide that option I ask for... so I might actually dig in myself.
Easier said that done though.

EDIT:
Deleting or renaming osso-contact-plugin.desktop doesn't work... Seems like default theme requires at least 3 tabs to function and so it brings another "Applications" tab if the "Contacts" one doesn't exist.

Ah well, I found an alternative for now. Install "personal-menu" (I found it in some repository though...) and you'll be able to hide "Contacts" tab in favor of new tab.

Anyone having more luck that me contact me please.

yes, it seems that Personal Menu there is the only way to customize this three-button sidebar.

quite annoying, i'd say -- all those duplicates in Web / Contacts and Applications tabs, which really doesn't simplifies anything

also, it's rather strange that there's still no way to edit / customize those two tabs, Web and Contacts, since their menu items certainly should appear in some kind of config files...
