and can handle HD material
Using the ARM Cortex alone, or with the help of the DSP + associated coprocessors?

heh, i recently toyed with the idea of using a beagleboard to build some kind of voip video phone that one could hook up to a normal tv without knowing much about computers.

I don't care (or know); it works.

My plan (more like "dream" at this point, what with all the delays and other trouble) was to have a small, low power, always on client pc (originally a Linutop, but I'm inclining toward a Beagle) in every major room (like kitchen, livingroom and bedrooms) attached to either a bigscreen tv or big computer monitors.

The central server would basically be a beefed-up NAS (with RAID! I just lost 250 GB of material to a collapsed disc), as the client pcs could take care of basic stuff like Internet access and productivity apps.

If I ever get to Thailand, I'll be sure to document the setup and how it turns out.

Ah, I was just wondering whether it would just work without any effort though

I know it works, because the Pandora is technically capable of playing HD content as well. The only problem is that the 3530 only has one HDMI-capable port, and Pandora uses it to drive the LCD (Pandora only has S-video out).

i guess they could have put some kind of splitter or something in there. but then the device is already very cramped and i guess the drm built into hdmi puts some limits on things...

Since Pandora is "hacker-encouraged", someone has already looked into that. Apparently it is not a smart thing to split HDMI and leave a connector open. It interferences badly.

The drm thing is indeed crap and one of the major reasons why my Evil Master Plan (see above) needs pcs: DVI is a lot nicer in that respect. And there's always good old VGA.

should have expected. and no chance of a switch that could swap between the internal lcd and a theoretical outside port?

Apparently not. Not that I personally care very much; Pandora is supposed to be a handheld computer, it has a great screen and formidable on-board multimedia capabilities. If I want to watch HD stuff on someone else's big screen, I'm not going to hook up my Panda to it, I'll bring a USB stick.

VGA out OTOH would have been nice, but I expect drivers for existing USB-to-VGA adapters to come along eventually (not for playing games or watching content, but sufficient for productivity work).
