My n800 is freshly flashed with diablo and, in case it makes a difference, I ran terrencegf's code above.

Not sure what "ignoring version from wrong domain" means in teh log but just adding my experience in case anyone else has the same issues.

There's not much of a difference except that the one in MediaBox is based on GTK/GDK rather than SDL. So the pygame dependency is not necessary. The one in MediaBox also doesn't have the DBus-features of mClock.

Try installing Python Launcher which should show up in application manager. It should install all the python stuff.

Do you have the "maemo extras" repository enabled in Application Manager? Start Application Manager, go to the menu "Tools -> Application catalog...". Is there something listed like "maemo Extras" or "maemo extras (diablo)"? If so, make sure the globe icon is not grayed-out (i.e. disabled). If it is, click "edit" and uncheck the "Disabled" checkbox.

If you don't have "maemo extras" at all, click the New button and add the following:

Code:
Catalog name: maemo extras (diablo)
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras/
Distribution: diablo
Components: free non-free
Click OK and let the application catalogs refresh. Now you should be able to install those dependencies. Note that you MAY have to do it from the command line (i.e. xterm).

Code:
sudo gainroot # or whatever method you use to become root
apt-get install python2.5-gnome python2.5-pygame python2.5-dbus

Ah, so you are a complete beginner? No problem. One way to gain root access in xterm is to install rootsh. It should also be available in the "maemo extras" repository.

thanks very much terencegf. once that's done i'll do a root but what if it asked "are you root?" what do i type. then what do i answer to "password?"

if you can i'd appreciate a line by line enter for installing the python2.5 files.

i'm confused sometimes as to my applications catalog where i have both the maemo extras Diablo and the maemo extras Chinook!? will they cause errors? yes, as i said, i am a absolute beginner...

thanks for being patient.

One way of getting root access is to install becomeroot.

Settings->Application Manager-> Select "Tools" from the top left-> Select Application Catalogue
Select "New" to add a new catalogue and enter the following:

Catalogue Name: Polish Eko1 repository
Web address: http://eko.one.pl/maemo/
Distribution: bora
Components: user

Then the application manager should refresh and if you choose to "Browse installable applications" you should see that becomeroot is available to install so go ahead and install it.

To actually become root you have to run Xterm (Utilities-> X Terminal) and then type "sudo gainroot" and you'll see a prompt like "/home/user #"
To close the root shell just type "exit" and "exit" again to close Xterm.
