I suppose it's not unreasonable to entertain the possibility a before-its-time-screen can happen again with the N900/RX-51.

Another reason to hope is that the device will have video out, and it would make sense to at least have graphics HW capable of the higher resolution for the larger screen. The N-series have video out, but constrained to the same low resolution as the phone display.

I'm still waiting for holographic screens!

I just read that headline! It would seem that Nokia is gearing up for a powerplay. Let's hope that the N900 is somewhere in all this confusion!

I've been teetering on the edge, holding off buying an N810 (I now have the cash). The only thing holding me back is the suspicion that the N900 is around the corner!

I hope this is the case. I think the N810 is a fabulous machine, and I'd love to buy one, but given the option, I think I'd choose the N900 for its increased specs. Of course, the N810 is well suited for the majority of my tasks as well.

Anyway, MWC is only 3 days away! The Capt'n will be watching!

Indeed. I've seen the beagleboard used as a mini desktop running debian (or ubuntu). Though the speed was very slow it was still impressive that it *could* be done. Especially considering it was at a good resolution.

For a media player, this would be great! I would totally make use of it watching vids with my g/f, in hotel rooms, or for presentations!

I'm in the same boat capt'n. Actually had a 810 ordered (still 500$ here) - but cancelled when the delivery was one week late. My n800 is getting old and my 3 year old son hogs it all the time.

the problem of resolution independence is the legacy apps and toolkits.

This is an excellent point!

Of course there are solutions to this as well. For example:

1) A window container that zooms 800x480 windows to the native res, using a dsp friendly filter, or a 3d composited ui's texel interpolation.

2) Differentiating between 'legacy' and modern apps in the files packaging, the executable, meta-data, etc, to determine if it should be scaled up.

3) Automatically assume a scaled window of 800x480. In other words assume that all apps are running 160 dpi (for example -- I don't know what the actual dpi is), and require that modern apps tell the UI that they want to deliver apps using a variable dpi. That way, the window is scaled, then the app sizes objects accordingly.

4) Have lower screen resolution modes set in x (for non maemo environments). This would be good for troopers that insist on installing debian and still save their eyesight!

I know it's wishful thinking, but I'm of the belief that sometimes
growing pains are necessary when rolling out new features.

An interesting side effect of resolution independence is that it would automatically make maemo suited for many different devices with varying screen dimensions in addition to simplified development.

just a technical comment: the Maemo UI is flexible already (since Bora or Chinook, can't remember). I remember Karoliina Salminen and/or Lucas Rocha demoing Hildon in a full PC desktop environment in 2007.

This flexibility does not, however, extend to resolution independence.

Wow! But a great find, nonetheless!

Sadly it appears that code didn't make it back into the hildon-desktop trunk. I'd be happy to be proven wrong though...
